DL To Hit 200 Destinations From ATL...

Sat Jun 18, 2005 10:46 am

This thread is more to settle a bet, but DL is about to announce another destination and when that announcement comes DL will be over 200 destinations from ATL during one week in September. Presently there are 199 destinations at around 1,037 daily departures from the World's Largest Airport. The destinations (minus unannounced)....

DL's hub at ATL is astounding. Is that 1037 mainline flights? I know they had like 800 mainline flights 3-4 years ago...

All information I have has ATL as the world's largest airport.
They have the world's largest hub by a very wide margin. The next closest hub is AA's DFW with about 813 daily departures.
UA's ORD has 639 daily flights.
CO's IAH has 667 daily flights.
DL has more departures just out of ATL than what B6 and FL have combined for their entire flight system.

Though that is not (yet) correct either, but should be by the end of the year  Wink .
Land-wise the biggest airport in the world is Rijadh, Riyadh, however you spell it, DEN's 2nd, and DFW third.

No.

Quoting EK156 (Reply 10):

Out of the list above, 45 are international, the rest is domestic.

Personally, I would have hoped that destination #200 would have been in China, but the DOT didn't play along.
Btw. DeltaMIA, isn't YVR only a seasonal destination as well?

Slight correction -- it's 833 daily flights, not 813, to a total of 153 cities (plus or minus a few). Still not DL in ATL, but it is as close as any other airline at any other hub gets!

From 2004:
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0004547.html

ATL is about 8 million ahead of ORD.

I have a question.

If a little old lady that knows jack about airlines, goes to a travel agent in West Palm Beach, and wants to fly to Syracuse. The agent books her on a DL flight that connects in ATL. Now is she part of that ATL figure?

Such an incredible accomplishment can also be a problem. Being too agressive toward Hub-Spoke leads to too much connecting traffic and drops in revenue generated, hence IMO the reason for Delta's snowballing cash flow situation. ATL is a very strong O&D market, but IMO there is no way that can accompany a 1000+ flights a day realistically speaking. I personally think that the DFW pullout may make the situation worse(opinion, yet to be determined).

I suggest they need to balance it out either by point-to-point, focus cities or new hubs more proportioned in size to O&D numbers there. DL has done a little of this with Song and other service, but it will take more than the little steps have have been already made. There are still 1000+ flights out of ATL!

Balance is the key to any business/industry for continued stability and positive growth, afterall, look at Southwest.

What do you mean brag? Any airline that had the most number of passengers would put that out. DFW lets people know about their land mass. LHR lets' people know it's the busiest International airport. ORD publicizes the fact they were the busiest back in the day.

The rolling hub system put in place in ATL not long ago has actually lessened the burden on ATC to move flights in/out of ATL. So much so that Delta was the #1 major in on-time for May.

This is a great site. But you must download the data to a spread sheet.

For instance you can take a particular Month. And pull up each airlines' number of departures, number of passengers, number of seats offerred, (hence load factor) for each non-stop market. I'm no expert, and I haven't looked into even half the different databases.

ATL ought to have more movements than ORD now after the DFW pulldown and the schedule restructuring (depeaking) in late January. ORD will eventually look like ATL if ORD's lovely neighbors stop being pinheads. 6 parallel 9-27 runways and the 2 existing 4-22s is the goal.

Not at all...its called Indy. Since they essentially fly the same routes as UA/UEX....there is a large increase in traffic than before. Besides that, IAD has always shown lots of growth year over year. I believe they maintained the title of fastest growing airport for many years in the past if not still currently.

Depeaking the hub has worked for operations, but my comments were in a revenue perspective, not operational.

Revenues to the airline are reduced when passengers connect as opposed to O&D making just one flight to the destination from orgin. Delta's flights out of ATL well surpass that of O&D demand in ATL causing the need for a majority of its passengers(outside ATL) to connect through a hub, which reduces revenues earned since it involves two different flights and must be a competitive fare at the same time.

This is why WN makes money while other carriers may die off a 60% loadfactor, especially in a competitive pricing situation; WN puts the planes right where people are going to fly them to and from, generating more revenue per passenger.

My suggestion was becoming more hybrid increasing point-to-point flying or redistributing flights and aircraft(new hubs or focus cities) in order to increase revenue per passenger by axing all that excessive connecting traffic; hence creating more of a balance from the extreme 1000+ flight hub-spoke.

That's kind of what they've been doing domestically despite the growth in ATL. The majority of growth has been Song and the hundreds of RJ flights up and down the East Coast and Florida. Point to point service.

Not anymore. It will be serviced year round when a 738 replaces the 763 in the offseason.

Excellent. Hadn't even realised that the flights was upgraded to a 763 other than on Saturday.
And about DL starting p2p service, it's not like DL isn't doing enough in that sector. As a matter of fact DL has also started non-Florida p2p routes, like RDU-MSY, CMH-BDL, or soon BDL-LAX. And to Florida alone, they must have added some 50 new p2p routes, like CHS/DAY/RIC-FLL/TPA/MCO, just to give 9 examples. And it's not like this is over. More routes will follow, particularly to FLL. Will be especially interesting once the EMB-170 flights are finally loaded into the schedules.

Has E70 schedule 1 been loaded yet? Don't they take delivery this month or next? Wouldn't first revenue flight be in August?

This will give real-time top US airports for arrivals in past 24 hrs. Give it a little time to calculate.

ATL/ORD are usually almost the same:

Can't wait to see what else is in store.

Look for FLL-GSP, FLL-CAE, and FLL-EYW to be announced this fall. FLL-HSV and FLL-SAV (SAV didn't work from Orlando, but South Florida is farther and a larger market) possibly as well.

You could also have written "Look for new service to markets that are already served from MCO and/or TPA  Wink ."
There's some 13 markets served from MCO but not served from FLL, though some seem unrealistic, like FLL-TRI/GPT/PFN.
Going DL's Florida Rule of Three, besides the routes you mentioned, FLL-TYS should also be in the cards. And since we're talking about DL Florida focus cities, I wouldn't be surprised to also see TPA-BHM, TPA-SDF, TPA-NAS (already announced, isn't it?) and TPA-BNA. That should equal up the cities served from MCO, TPA and FLL, except some solely served from MCO.

Many of these are also regional jet routes, 50-70 seats, it is better than having them feed the hub though. I mentioned some efforts (Song and the few mainline) in my earlier post, though these flights are being added, it is still well off balanced from ATL. There is still a lot of connecting traffic slowing revenues in ATL that does not need to be there. Delta has many more city pairs (larger markets than regional) that could benefit them much further.

Most of these routes will be starting in the next few weeks. The only exception being TPA-BNA which DL has not announced.
