Air Canada 747s, Connies In YYC - Question?

Sun Jun 19, 2005 4:44 am

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if TCA/Air Canada operated the Lockheed Constellations in to Calgary, Canada (YYC) or were they used on other trans-cons like YVR-YUL. Also, during the 1980s/90s, did Air Canada fly 747-100s into YYC in this livery, the burgundy stripes.

AC had 6 747 classics when this double-stripe AC livery was introduced in the late 80's. Only 1 of the 6 747 classics was painted in this scheme (the 741 F-FTOC painted above). The 3 744's were also painted in this scheme.

This 741 was AC's oldest 747 in the late 80's and was used primarily on leisure routes such as YYZ-KIN/MGB, YYZ-MAN, YYZ-GLA, YYZ-LAS (charter series). At one point in the late 80's it had an all-Y configuration of 450+ seats.

It perfectly reasonable that it could have been used on YYC-LHR. AC operated a daily 741 to LHR in the late 80's/early 90's routing YYC-YEG-LHR or YEG-YYC-LHR.

As C-FTOC was the only classic in this scheme, I had a hard time ever spotting it.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

So does anyone know if Trans Canada Airlines (TCA) operated the Constellations into YYC (Calgary) as well? I know the DC-3 and the North Stars were used.

Thanks

Jamie

Quoting Jamtide (Thread starter):

after seeing this photograph i wonder why don't they go back to this livery again. Shall be far better than that toothpaste/mouthwash livery they are pushing down the throat.

The Air-Britain book on the Constellation says TCA scheduled them across Canada from 9/54 to 1/61. The 4/57 OAG shows one YUL-YYZ-YYC-YVR.

Trans-Canada operated the Super Connie on a transcon flight through Calgary, once daily in each direction. This is taken from a TCA timetable, Summer 1958.

TC 007 "Calgary Mercury" last flight May 31, 1958
YYZ 1630 - 2005 YYC 2035 - 2240 YVR

TC 009 "Calgary Mercury" effective June 01, 1958
YYZ 0100 - 0435 YYC 0505 - 0710 YVR

TC 008 "Calgary Mercury" last flight May 31, 1958
YVR 2045 - 2240 YYC 2310 - 0740 YYZ

TC 010 "Calgary Mercury" effective June 01, 1958
YVR 0715 - 0910 YYC 0940 - 1810 YYZ

These flights were flown in a combined First and Economy class configuration, (unlike the Atlantic L1049s which were flown in a Deluxe, First, Economy and Tourist configuration!!!)

Also doing transcons at the same time, but not nonstop, were Viscounts in a First configuration and the DC-4M2s in a Tourist configuration.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!
