BN HQ @ DFW

Mon Jun 20, 2005 5:06 am

Hi Texans!

What happened to the BN HQ that was built at DFW during the Lawrence years?

Is it being used? I understand it was quite something when it was built.

thanks,

GTE (later renamed Verizon) bought it, and as far as I know, they're still there.

The main entrance is off West Airfield Drive, not far from the AA hangars. But you can't see much of the place from the road. They built up a grassy hill along the entire stretch of it.

I've read a description of the place in Splash of Colors. Sounds like Harding Lawrence liked spending his company's money.

Thanks Roger, I read that book too, way, way long ago, a have always wondered what happened to the building since they spent so much on it.

I wonder why BN never built a hangar at DFW. Did they keep their DAL hangar complex open for the 8 years they were at DFW?

I also read in Splash of Colors that a VP at BN took an Alexander Calder mobile (artistic) out of one of the BN office's the night of the bankruptcy.

Seems somebody has a very expensive piece of artwork in their home......

BN maintained its extensive maintenance hangars at DAL and, in fact, these were folded into what became DalFort at DAL when BNII (the Pritzker era) began.

BN's old home at DAL is pretty much abandoned, now, with Singapore Aerospace having wound down DalFort's MX ops.

Braniff did have a hangar at DFW, it's now used by AA, the one next to the Eagle hangar.

A lot of Calder artwork was stolen, including paintings and models. They have to be around somewhere. Someone has them hanging on their walls.

As NikonDFW said, Braniff did open a line maintenance hangar at DFW when the airport opened in 1974. All heavy maintenance was performed over at Love Field in the hangar opened in 1957. IIRC Braniff also had a line maintenance hangar at Miami for South American DC8s.

The old Braniff hangar at DFW is now part of American's huge DFW line maintenance complex - it's behind the American Eagle hangar on West Airfield Drive. You can really only see it if you're taking off - it's mostly blocked by the newer American Eagle hangar.
