Air China Excess Baggage

Mon Jun 20, 2005 5:43 am

Hi guys,

A friend of mine will fly with Air China from PVG to FRA in a few weeks, coach class. Have you had any experience with their policy regarding excess baggage? How much more is OK without paying money? Co-workers of him have told some quite different stories about their policy.

Thanks in advance.

Well, the limit will be 20kg. I'd expect to start paying over 25kg, but it does depend sometimes on the agent.

Depending on the contents / reason for the excess baggage, you could try contacting Air China to request an excess baggage authorisation. Supporting documents would of course be required. Usually authorisations are for an additional 10 or so kg.

Hope this helps.

Can't say for sure how Air China will be, but just returned from a trip to China a couple of weeks ago, and the domestic flights (China Eastern, China Southern etc.) were absolutely strict with regards to weight. Had three domestic flights and on each one saw many, many people getting "dinged" and having to cough up cash at check in.

Regards,

You know, this is so funny. I once took CA out of PEK on a 777-200ER to KIX. At the counter the ground staff told me that I had to pay in order to bring that luggage with me. I kept on saying that I have no Chinese Yuan or anything and said that I will get rid of the bag (throw it away). Then I went through the customs and brought it with me onboard. But that was 2-3 years ago.
