Happy 21st Birthday Virgin Atlantic

Happy 21st Birthday Virgin.....

I'm usually a critic of Sir Richard Branson, but behind the smoke and mirrors is an excellent airline that in all but three of its 21 years has made a profit.

The best (in my opinion) aviation newsletter http://www.abtn.co.uk in the UK sums up the airline well:

"many (including your editor) were sceptical as to the success of the new project.... Never have so many been proven wrong, with today’s Virgin Atlantic a major force in international long distance air transport, with a current fleet of 32 aircraft and the mighty Airbus A380 on order. When Cuba, Montego Bay and Dubai are added to the route network later this year Virgin Atlantic will serve 30 airports allaround the globe."

1984 seems like a long time ago

British Caledonian was a powerful second force to BA.
Pan Am ordered the Airbus A310 and the recently unveiled A320.
For the first time a twin-engine passenger jet was allowed to fly non-stop across the Atlantic, an El Al Boeing 767.

Happy Birthday Virgin.

I have taken VS in October 1985 EWR-LHR(?)-EWR, May 1987 (LHR-EWR) and Dec 1995 (EWR-LHR-EWR), all on 747's. I remember my first flight with VS was on their first a/c, the 'Virgin Flyer' (scrapped out a few years ago). Last August, my then 17 year old neice flew VS EWR-LHR-EWR on A-340's They were always a bit more fun to be flying with than BA or the other majors and liked the little goodies packs even coach pax were given. Their competitive pricing, fun attitude and quality service has kept them in business and growing. They also have been a good influence on the airline industry around the world.
VS started when they took over the 'discount airline' slot for EWR-UK flights (originally to LGW, from BCal in 1984). Congrats to 21 years of service - now they can drink in the USA!  champagne

will VS ever come to SoutAmerica, maybe GIG, or GRU??The only competition from LHR is BA and RG, and BA is doing pretty well.

Quoting LTBEWR (Reply 4):
VS started when they took over the 'discount airline' slot for EWR-UK flights (originally to LGW, from BCal in 1984).

BCal was never, never a "discount airline" or a LCC! At that time the service on BCal was far superior to BA, which was then state owned. BCal had to compete against BA, despite not having access to LHR and without any state subsidies that BA received.

I think you must be confusing BCal with Peoplexpress and possibly Laker Skytrain. Rumour has it that SRB decided to go into the airline business as he found the Peoplexpress booking line constantly engaged, so thought there must be a demand for low-cost flights between LGW and EWR.

Laker Skytrain went bust and Peoplexpress soon disappeared when it was acquired by CO. That was when the original Virgin flights commenced, aimed at the back packers rather than the business passengers that they have today.
MOL on SRB's latest attack at BA: "It's like a little Chihuahua barking at a dying Labrador. Nobody cares."

A Very Happy 21st Birthday Virgin Atlantic!

A superb and high quality airline which still considers, and appreciates, it's passengers. Looking forward to my next flight to Sydney shortly, and many more to come!
