Vietnam To Sign $500m Order For 787 Today

Tue Jun 21, 2005 12:00 am

Old news perhaps, but today the Prime Minister of Vietnam is in Seattle to consumate an agreement with Boeing for 4 new 787's.

Quote:

Khai, a Soviet-educated economist, was to meet executives from companies like Boeing and Microsoft in the Seattle area. Vietnam is expected to sign a contract to buy four Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" planes, worth around $500 million, during Khai's visit.

Good news for Vietnam!

How many options do they have on the 787?

My informal, non-scientific list (Excel spreadsheet) shows zero options. If someone has better information, please feel free to correct me.

Intel is looking to build a chip plant in Vietnam and the business will only get more lucrative as wounds heal and time passes.

4 airframes now may not be huge, but I would take it as a good indicator that they are at least satisfied with their 777's they bought earlier, so although it's just four now, it's got to be good news for the future.

Are these to be B787-3s or B787-8s?

IIRC these were all 787-8's.

I don't have any information on engines for the VN order.

So far (again according to my little list), the only signed 787 orders that have specified engine selection are:
NH - 30 787-3 (firm) 20 787-8 firm 0 options - RR Trent 1000
NZ - 2 (unknown model) (firm) + 16 options - RR Trent 1000
DP - 6 787-8(firm) + 6 options - GE GEnx

IIRC, they are 787-8s. According to VN, they are/were to be used on long-thin routes, which initially meant flights from SGN/HAN to the West Coast of the United States (or at least they hinted as much). Now with VN set for entry into SFO in 2006 with the 772ER, the 787s won't likely be used on this route, when it enters service with VN in 2010.

So the question remains is where are these 787s going to go?
A distinct possibility is to replace the 777s on some flights to Japan.
Another is to open routes such as SGN-YVR, which might be low-yield with a 777, but may be sustainable with a 787.

There are lots of possibilities, and VN, is actively trying to become a regional player, competing with the likes of SQ, TG, & MH. It will be interesting to see how VN develops its route network over the next 5 years. I am almost certain more 787s will be ordered by VN, as, at least on paper, it is the perfect plane for a moderate sized, but growing airline.

When I think of VN's 787s... ZRH and AMS come to mind... remember, KLM used to fly 3 times weekly to SGN via KUL and Swissair flew thrice weekly via SIN...

Also, I have heard humours that VN might fly to YVR, too.

And BNE is on the list of expansion programme.

London may be another destination, but well, I think if VN would fly to LHR then they would deploy the 777s.

BTW, VN used to indicate that they would purchase 14 x 787s planes... so perhaps, they will sign an option for more 787s later...they need them to replace their 767s.

Interesting to see that VN uses Boeing aircraft on long-haul routes and the buses on regional routes. There was once when VN wanted to lease/purchase 4 x 330, but they seem to drop the plan.

Well, with AC's cancellation of their 787 LOI, that would make slots available for, you got it, 14 787s. Wonder if VN will consider it.

But I still think SQ does need those 787s and they may take the slots.

How did you come up with SQ needing 787? From what I've heard they have no need for the 787 right now.

SQ announced an RFP for 787/350 sized aircraft.

From Boeing's WWW site:

http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/2005/q2/nr_050621g.html

I love the color scheme. But I still do not think that the finalised B787 lines are as sexy as the initial artist's impression...

Agreed. Part of the sexiness, though, comes from the wavey Boeing livery. It's a visual trick that even makes the 772LR look sexier.

For "straight line" liveries like Vietnam, it will take away from any subtle curves the design has.

Well, I will correct myself. Based on the Boeing press release I guess they have announced 11 options:

"Vietnam Airlines plans for the 787 to be its future mid-sized, twin-aisle jetliner. The new airplanes, which are valued at $500 million at list prices, are scheduled for delivery in 2009 and 2010. The agreement also includes purchase rights for 11 additional airplanes in the 2010 - 2013 time frame."

Actually, the only two types that the Dreamliner livery suits, in my opinion, are the B787 and the B717 (because they both have a similar low nose profile). But I'll drop it and refrain from hijacking this thread to bitch about the final B787 looks and the Dreamliner livery.  Smile
