IIRC, they are 787-8s. According to VN
, they are/were to be used on long-thin routes, which initially meant flights from SGN
to the West Coast of the United States (or at least they hinted as much). Now with VN
set for entry into SFO
in 2006 with the 772ER, the 787s won't likely be used on this route, when it enters service with VN
So the question remains is where are these 787s going to go?
A distinct possibility is to replace the 777s on some flights to Japan.
Another is to open routes such as SGN
, which might be low-yield with a 777, but may be sustainable with a 787.
There are lots of possibilities, and VN
, is actively trying to become a regional player, competing with the likes of SQ
, & MH
. It will be interesting to see how VN
develops its route network over the next 5 years. I am almost certain more 787s will be ordered by VN
, as, at least on paper, it is the perfect plane for a moderate sized, but growing airline.
