Helicopter Crash In Heby, Sweden - All On Video

Tue Jun 21, 2005 9:54 pm

Several passengers were wounded. The Helicopter was chartered to take a man celebrating his 100th birthday and parts of his family to a island outside Stockholm for a party. Apparently the helicopter had difficulties taking of and hit something on the ground making it crash.

See video of the crash here: svt.se

Seem like it was a Lithuanian Mil-2, some complaints earlier about this or a similar Mil-2 flying aggressively. Shame, they should´ve gone for the Ka-26
instead....

I can't understand the decision of the pilot to continue with the take-off and flight after having obvious difficulties with getting the craft of the ground in the first place. He should have aborted the take-off within the first few seconds.

How many chances did that guy get to just settle the chopper down and abort the whole thing - I kept saying "just land it!!". On one occasion he was only inches from the ground - why didn't he just put it down!

No one was killed. 8 persons onboard including pilot. 5 persons were taken to a local hospital and the 100 year old were airlifted (by helicopter...) to a university hospital according to the press.

This was first his first time flying. A similar or the same helicopter had a "incident" recently, when landing at a castle during a promotion of some Swedish musicians, tail-rotor went dangerously close to some threes.

That was a very scary video! Funny thing is, when it has crashed, look at the Volvo about 20 feet in front of it - absolutely untouched!

Lol - sick I know but the first thing I was thinking was "That poor guy who left his nice shiny Volvo there!" Of all the places to leave it!

Even if it hit the Volvo, it would stand up to it!!LOL! Hell, my 440 survived a deer strike at 80mph head on! Volvo's are tanks! Not a good first experience of flying for that guy though, and doesn't do much for my apprehension towards helicopters. Give me fixed wing any day! Hope the pax are OK and recover well.

Scary indeed. Kind of looks to me like the guy in the pilot's seat had no idea at all how to fly this thing. I'm happy everyone survived.

So I'm not the only one! When I saw that I yelled out, "The owner of that car is soooooo lucky!".  Silly

Scary video though...clearly a wreckless pilot...so many chances to abort and yet he continues. This should be an Aviation Darwin Award Nominiee right here.

Very sad indeed, looks like the ship was too heavy for take off and had problems getting into translational flight, but then why try and take off down a street with people and vehicles ?

My thoughts are with the mans family.
