US Airways To Resume Hot Meals In First

Wed Jun 22, 2005 10:58 am

Hot Meals

Effective Aug. 1, US Airways will resume a more traditional First Class service on its transcontinental routes.

“We are pleased to again provide a full meal service in First Class. Based on customer feedback, we believe this positive change will better meet the needs of our travelers,” said Director of Inflight and Dining and Cabin Services Steve Kingsley.

The breakfast menu will include fresh fruit, a choice of two hot entrees, and breakfast breads. Lunch and dinner service on these routes will include a fresh salad, choice of two hot entrees, and a light dessert. This service will replace the complimentary "InFlight Cafe" meals that have been served on a temporary basis.

Hmm, offering First Class service in a First Class cabin. How forward thinking...

My sentiments exactly. One of the many reasons I quit flying US and changed loyalty to CO.

I'll be however, there will still be the cute plastic glasses and styrofoam coffee cups? How low rent is that?

I'm guessing he got it off the employee website, so even if you cannot find it, I will confirm that this is 100% true if anybody has any doubts.

I would ove to be able to fly CO more often, but they leave out of EWR and it is much easier for me to go to PHL. It's only a 20 min. ride. So I'm stuck with US basically.

I flew US on CLT-LAS & LAS-PHL last spring ('04), and again PIT-SEA & SEA-CLT in September, and had hot meals both directions both times.

Tasty food, I thought, but was disappointed by the champagne servied in plastic and styrofoam coffee cups. I'm hoping US/HP can make a go of it!!
Finally made it to an airline mecca!

Sounds like they're bringing their first class up to the established HP (America West) standard.

How insane is it that the "low cost, low fare" carrier is forcing the established, full fare, full service airline to upgrade their service?

Anyone know how the US international first class is?

As was stated before this is a RESUMPTION of the Hot meal service...it was suspended for 6 months while US found a new caterer. This has nothing to do with the pending merger with America West.

And cold meals can be quite good. Shrimp and lobster salads, smoked salmon and bagel, roast beef, cold chicken caesar, etc. Do it right, and cold is good. Do it wrong and hot is bad. But still, when people buy a First Product, they tend to expect a good hot meal at meal time.

It takes six months to find a caterer??  Yeah sure When US cut hot meals it was described as a cost cutting effort. Hopefully Triple B and the rest of the Crystal City numbskulls will be out on their collective arses and HP management can make Frankenstein Air into a cohesive competitive airline.

From the Legend days, I learned that cold meals were actually more expensive than hot. It has to due with the freshness of the food.

Why are they waiting until August 1? Last April I flew US in F SFO-PHL, they threw a box lunch on your tray, the one that hose in economy paid for. I thought it was incredible!

Um, no, it wasn't.  Yeah sure

Starting this week, US Airways says it is temporarily halting the meals on transcontinental flights because it is switching food vendors. Instead, first-class passengers will receive a complimentary meal in a box, known as In-Flight Cafe -- the same meal boxes available for purchase in coach.

US Airways spokeswoman Amy Kudwa said she did not know how long first-class passengers would receive meals in a box, but promised "traditional first-class meals will return."

I was wondering how long it would take the US execs to figure out that their FF'ers would get pissed off at this move, not to mention their full paying first class customers. Who would want a cold sandwich for the price of a first class ticket? I know they are trying to save money but this would seem to drive your higher paying customers away....losing alot more money than your saving by downgrading the level of service and pissing off your best customers. Whoever made that move needs to have their head examined.

You act as if someone actually pays an F fare on US. I'd be willing to assume 80% or more of their F pax are riding on their 500 mile upgrades or whatever they call them.

Tornado-US Airways now has free space-available upgrades for their elite members within a certain time frame before departure (a week for Platinum, three days for Gold, a day for Silver).

Well damnit!!! I would still be Silver if I hadn't given up my loyalty to US and joined in with the Skyteam members at the beginning of the PIT screwjob. HAHA. Oh well, like it matters, there's no such thing as first on an ERJ, Saab, or Dash 8, and that's all we see here at ABE... and most of the time I'm just going to IND and that's typically an RJ too.

If passengers were paying First Class fares for First Class service, meals would have never disappeared.

Today's legacy carriers have placed way too much emphasis on stroking the egos of people who think their level of business should entitle them to a First Class seat.

Back before frequent flyer programs, bonafide FREQUENT, high revenue generating passengers were recognized with certificates and such. Airlines never thought about giving away a seat, first class or coach. I live for the day that these frequent flyer programs are eliminated and people get what they pay for.

Seeing what we "give away" every day in the front cabin is ridiculous.
Tired of airline bankruptcies....EA/PA/TW and finally DL.

Some people still buy first class tickets...imagine if you paid that amount of money for a cold sandwich. Also, Elite's may not pay for the upgrade, but they deserve the first class seat and meal for being loyal to thier particular airline...which in this case, US should be overjoyed for. Goodness knows US hasn't done much to keep their high paying and loyal customers around. Seems like they have downgraded everything. Which is the case for most U.S. airlines.....all except for CO, which has kept their meals and services intact...good for them....I hope they can buck the trend.
