KLM B747-400 Names

Sun Apr 23, 2000 6:21 am

KLM B747-400´s are named after different international cities (i.e. Bangkok, Seoul, Jakarta, Rio de Janeiro, Atlanta, etc).

My question is: which criteria did they take to name a specific city? I know these are cities served by the airline but any other?

Also, who decides this in KLM for this aircraft and others (management, by voting, etc)?

Is KLM expected to receive any new B747-400´s?

I once read that they get the names for the cities that either KLM, or KLM 747-400's serve. Although I have reason to doubt this. I have seen a picture in a book that shows one titled 'City of Ottawa'. Does KLM serve YOW, and if so, what aircraft do they use?

There really is no aircraft named "City of Ottawa".
The 737 classic (-300 and -400) have names of famous historic people (like Rontgen). 737NG have bird names (Swan, Grouse), 767 have bridge names (Brooklyn Bridge), MD-11 I don't know, 747-300 have again famous names of aviation pioneers.

Why Would They At B744 Atlanta?

Sun Apr 23, 2000 6:39 pm

Why would there be a 747-400 called 'Atlanta'?

As far as I recall, every time I have ever seen KLM planes in Atlanta, (they get in around 2pm do they not?) they are always 767-300ERs. I have never seen a KLM 747 in Atlanta.

Can anyone enlighten me?

RE: KLM B747-400 Names + New Ones

KLM names the B747-400 after intercontinental destinations they serve at the time of delivery of the aircraft. Moreover they try to give the aircraft a name starting with the last letter of the registration. The fact that a B747-400 flies to a destination is not important (as no B747 has ever flown to Freetown, Guayaquil and Lima).

As Atlanta is the one of the few intercontinental destination starting with an A it's named after this city. Don't forget that B747's used to come to Atlanta (they stopped sending B747's to Atlanta when KLM started to fly to Memphis).

If KLM discontinues a destination that doesn't mean that KLM will alter the name on the B747-400. KLM doesn't fly anymore to Freetown, Orlando, Melbourne and Karachi but the names haven't been changed (why I don't know). As for the City of Ottawa. KLM sometimes changes the name of an aircraft for an inagrual flight. That's why it's possible that you see aircraft with a different name as the name they usually have (after the inagrual flight KLM gives the plane it's original name back).

The next B747-400's will be PH-BFW (oct200), PH-BFY(apr2001), PH-BFZ(sep2004) and PH-BGB(feb2005). The names are not yet know but it wouldn't suprise me if one of these B744 will be the City of Detroit (just like Northwest has the city of Amsterdam).

Just like City of Detroit, City of Kuala Lumpur is one of the next in line to be named on a Boeing 747-400

Hello Lh423:

To answer your question, Yes, KLM did fly
into Ottawa, from 1987 to 1992??.

The original flight landed in June of 1987 a hot
Wed. afternoon under cloudy, hazy skies. The air
craft that touched down was a 747-238 SCD, named
"Dr Albert Plessman". It departed for Halifax at
around 6:15 as KL676, on Wed, and Friday.
Over the next couple of years, KLM operated a third weekly flight, Wed-Fri-Sun. service. Eventually, the 747's gave way to Martinair's
The last flight was in March of 1992, a 767 of
Martinair. KLM ceased Ottawa service because the
route was not profitable.

I do have MANY photos I took of the 747 and 767
of KLM/Martinair when they were in Ottawa.
My favorite is the first flight into Yow on a
hot wed afternoon, especially when the viewing road quickly filled up with the curious waiting for the flying dutchman to touch down!!

Any possibility of a KLM 747-400 being named after the City of New York or London?

KLM does not have ottawa flight, but after the flight to montreal, you can take a KLM bus: the "capitale express" to Ottawa (as for Air France, with a bus painted with a big Concorde taking-off:beautiful)
