D.C. Mad That Southwest Has A Maryland Plane!

Thu Jun 23, 2005 5:18 am

Can you believe this??? There's an article in USAToday that has this politician ranting and raving about Southwest's 'Maryland One.' He wants a D.C. plane and feels that Southwest 'owes' them that because BWI has 'Washington' in its name.

The nerve of this political beggar! 'Entitlement' must be his middle name. The politician, District of Columbia Councilman Jack Evans, introduced a RESOLUTION (!) to get Southwest to do this (ed. comment: Slow work day, eh Ed?). Evans uses flowery Liberal language like 'It would only be fair' and 'owes' in his begging:

"It would only be fair to us in the District of Columbia that they add to that a District of Columbia plane," Evans said. He noted BWI shares the Washington name and contends Southwest owes much of its growth there to D.C. residents."

What a laughable joke this is, and Evans is. 'Jack' is a good name for him.

What a moron. Baltimore Washington International... yes Washington is in the name. But whether it has the name in there or not, it is located on Maryland soil. So WN should start painting their planes after what's actually in the airport name? Well, they go to Barry M. Goldwater Terminal 4 at PHX. So how about a 737 with Goldwater's image on the tail and do away with Arizona One? Sounds just as stupid as "Mommy!!!! WN made a Maryland One plane for MD, but now they won't make one for me! Not Fair!!!"

We have how many problems facing the nation right now and he chooses to fight for "DC One"? Good grief, no wonder nothing gets done in Washington. I would be curious if his constituency supports his work on this rather than some of the more import issues facing DC and our nation. But since when have politicians cared what we want?

So I guess Virginia will complain next because the technical name of IAD is "Washington/Dulles" International Airport. So under DC's logic VA needs a SW plane...nevermind the fact that SW doesn't fly to DCA or IAD.

Why do they owe them a favor!!! Washington DC will not even let them fly from their own hub. They should tell them we will get a DC one when you repeal the Wright Amendment. How can they say that, you tell an airline that they can only fly to bordering states from their hub so AA will be happy and fell good about themselves (and DFW) and then you want them to name a plane after you. You don't jerk someone around and then demand they honor you!! A load of bull$&*t!!!!

I was thinking about the hypocricy between the Wright Ammendment and this story, until I came to the (probable) conclusion that the D.C. council has nothing to do with the Wright Ammendment. In fact, in spite of it being a federal law I think the W.A. is more of a Texas thing than a D.C. one.

When he isn't trying to extort Virginia and Maryland residents into paying a commuter tax to DC, this is indeed the kind of foolishness Jack Evans is famous for.

It's true. Just the other day another Councilmember, Carol Schwartz, introduced a measure to ban the sale of alcohol in bars and nightclubs. That's right, no alcohol in bars.

It was a symbolic gesture to draw attention to another bill calling for the restaurant/bar smoking ban already in place in New York City and a lot of other places.

Getting back to aviation, I think Maryland One is stunning, and it does help after all that the state of Maryland invested millions of dollars in a new terminal for Southwest, and is at the same time making a lot of other structural improvements for their benefit at their #3 hub.

And after all, what would go on a DC One? Marion Barry smoking crack? A dilapidated public school with no air conditioning and mercury in the hallways? How about someone getting a cavity search by the Capitol Police?

So one flashy plane and all of a sudden Washington wants to get involved in the airline industry? Screw the plane - if they want to help the industry, work on lowering the price of oil or protecting those penisons or for goodness sakes do something about TSA and airport security. Why not work on updating the air traffic control system?

Actually, the agreement was (after the Revolutionary War) that the South would pay the war debt if the Nations Capital was relocated in the South. Maryland and Virginia carved out a square of land to be the new District of Columbia. In the 1800's it was determined by the Federal Government that they would never be big enough to use all of it- so Virginia was given back their land.

So, essentially DC is IN Maryland....... and there is ocasional talk of folding it back into Maryland.

The point to all of this? Maryland One represents the folks in DC too!

Thank You PANAM747 because I thought I was crazy for a second. I knew for a FACT that all of the Air Force One's are based at Andrews. Air Force One flies over my house occassionally on its way to Andrews. Its so kewl to see the Presidents plane flying over my house. Usually its at around 5,000 and maybe lower.

Southwest paints their state flag liveries to honor the states that they not only serve, but dominate. CA, NV, AZ, NM, MD, and most importantly TX.

It had to be a liberal to bring this whiny, socialist crap up. DC has more issues to deal with than some airline painting their jet in a flag livery of an airport/state they DON'T serve, because it's unfair. What has that guy been smokin'? (And he probably inhaled.) These are the same guys who say that there need to be more jobs, when we actually need more businesses, because that creates jobs! Jack Evans deserves the foot-in-mouth award. I'm quite sure the liberal media and press are jumping all over this one, and will incite the masses to protest this.

Herb Kelleher should go up to Jack Evans with mistletoe tied to his back belt loop and tell Evans to pucker up!

While I think this Councilman is a moron, this does pose an interesting question: to what extent do you credit the city whose name is on the airport, when the airport is in a very different jurisdiction?

BWI is pretty far from DC - it's a Baltimore airport, not a DC airport. However, if it were DCA and Virginia One, then Jack Evans would have a case, because DCA is clearly marketing and serving Washington, DC. If WN flew to CVG and had a plane called Kentucky One, then the people of Cincinnati and SW Ohio would rightfully be mad. But as I said, BWI is so far from DC that I think it's a non-issue.

In the same vein, if the NY Giants are renamed the New Jersey Giants because they play in East Rutherford, many New Yorkers would raise hell!

What Evan's fails to realize is that Virginia probably contributes as much or more than DC residents to WN's flights out of BWI. And you add up the Norfolk pax you get a much more sizable base.

So the next plane should be "Sic semper tyrannis" a message DC politicians should probably heed.

They must of read the Sunpaper article I brought up and the statement by Joe Paca about the livery, and decided to take it further. Glad to see that the Post didn't bother to report this latest episode.

It's Thurgood Marshall (from Maryland) Baltimore - Washington International Airport, NOT Washington - Baltimore International Airport. Baltimore is in MARYLAND, therefore we have MARYLAND ONE.

If they do this, they'd have to do one plane for each state. Does WN have enough money to paint 51 planes in a special livery?

(shame on me for posting to a topic that is carried on far too long....)

for one, perhaps the header should more accurately read "DC Councilman protests....". let's tell it like it is.

second, it certainly is not uncommon for politicians - be it at the local, state, or federal levels - to float seemingly ridiculous arguments or proposals to call attention to something and maybe rally constituents behind the cause. if evans gets 25 emails from people who agree with him on this, i still dont think you'll hear much of it again.

that being said, it is a silly argument. BWI is a major focus city/hub/whatever in the state of maryland, and maryland has done a lot to support WN's continued existence there, the new terminal being no exception. this form of tribute is certainly appropriate.

but it is true that much of WN's success at BWI has to do with DC, VA, and even DE and PA pax as it does with those from MD. and make no mistake about it, BWI (if not by name alone) markets itself as an airport for baltimore AND the DC/NoVA areas, and has continually being making efforts to reach out to those pax to the southwest of the airport (no pun intended).

I say, let the state of MD have their precious "Maryland One" and WN for that matter. DC and Northern VA have Dulles, one of the fastest growing airports in the country, without WN. The area around BWI and Baltimore proper as a whole is a white trash, stink hole, to be quite frank.

Meanwhile, the counties around IAD have become the wealthiest in America. Dulles has helped make DC and surrounding suburbs the fastest growing in the country. And we're talking good, high paying jobs. The "Dulles Corridor" as it's called is a corporate/high-tech metropolis. WN may attract cheap fliers but I'll take the benefits of legacy carriers and their hubs any day.

Quoting NRTfan (Reply 16):
And after all, what would go on a DC One? Marion Barry smoking crack? A dilapidated public school with no air conditioning and mercury in the hallways? How about someone getting a cavity search by the Capitol Police?

Ah yes, DC sets such a fine example for the rest of the country!!

Anyways, if it's like this, I want a Tampa One too!

DCAflyboy-

You obviously know NOTHING about the BWI area. Anne Arundel County (the county BWI is in) has one of the highest housing prices period. Within 15 minutes of the airport are homes STARTING from 1 million dollars. Areas of Baltimore City where houses START in the 800,000 dollar range.

Last time I drove into DC, it was down New York Ave. People who live in glass houses (or in your case an empty thunderbird bottle), should
not throw stones.

We would invite you to visit BWI, but the police don't like vagrants in the terminal.

This is funny, why not have a Georgia One? BHM is WN's gateway to ATL, via highway... A peach on the fuselage on a WN jet wouldn't be too bad... sarcastic

Actually, I lived in Annapolis (Anne Arundel County) for two years and loved it. The status and growth of AA County has much less to do with proximity to Baltimore or BWI as it does with it's proximity to DC. The prosperity of DC and it's increase in housing values has affected it's outer suburbs along with Annapolis much more so than Baltimore. Please.
