Well, the answer to this question really depends on who you ask. Some say it is because BA cancelled some 747 orders and converted them to 777s, so in order to not pay a cancellation penalty to RR, the chose RR on the 777s. Some say it was because of the politics of buying British engines. Then there is those that insist BA is not happy with their GE's. Oh, and of course, some say its "all of the above". Who really knows? No idea, but I bet they don't frequent this forum

Trust me, BA lost patience with GE quality (that's from a BA763 Captain, and an ex-LHR ATCer (not my opinion, not British poilitics, not Europe vs. US etc)

I agree - spoke to the Head of BA Engineering here in BAH a while back and he said the GE90 was the worst designed, constructed and put together big fan ever.

Seems they used too much composites (that proceeded to crack) for their own good.

BTW, Tailscraper, are we going to be blessed with a report of one of your Biz class adventures (bastard...)

I'm sorry, I don't think I heard that correctly, what was that 777er???

Well, there ain't an awful lot to report really, principally because the idiots at check-in stuck me in an aisle seat, when windows were actually available; they were reserved, I found out later, for EK crew on leave.

Not bad though, the terminal's looking pretty glossy, they've put in a McD's and a Starbucks, and apparently a fellow Airliners.Net contributor (Avion) was around at the same time, off to ZRH. We were aboard A6-EKR (flown with it to MAN twice). Lots of great scenery in the early part of the flight (Iranian Desert/Zagros Mts.-study that for A-Level), Black sea, Turkey, Thessalonika in Northern Greece, (was chatting to the crew up front at that point) Croatia (Beautiful coastline) and then crappy weather over Europe blocks the view.

Both Crew were from OZ (there's a surprise   ), the Captain was ex-Ansett 762, we were discussing my options with regards to learning to fly (University Air Squadron seems a good choice), then finish off whatever I need to do, to get a JAA PPL, probably in the States, although there ain't no drinking for under 21's, this is a problem for me

Well, we took some photos (the crew and I), and that was it really-I've done the same old route lots of times, so it gets a bit boring. I'm off to Riyadh with BA in June, hopefully in the jumpseat for T/O, and hopefully landing if I'm good (I'll bring some booze for the flightcrew), they should allow me to remain for landing.

By the way, the PPruNe gang are sorting out a Sim day, not sure where, but at a special rate of £75 for 1 hour (bargain considering it's usually £200), not sure about the aircraft type, if you're interested, log on to the Wannabes forum, and express you're interest there.

By the way, the weather here is the usual (as far as Shropshire is concerned anyway), so enjoy what you have left of in Bahrain.

Cheers,
Alex.

If British Airways is not satisfied with their GE90 777s, why don't they re-engine them with Trents or sell or trade them for new 777s?

Re-engining (does that make sense?-no, but who cares), might be a possibility, I don't think tit-for-tat is likely, OR the Brits could do what they do best, ie.
nothing, and put up with it (like the British weather).

I'm not sure I would want to"put up with it" if I am a passenger on a BA 777 flight and the GE90 has a fan blade failure. Aren't CO's 777 powered by the GE90? What's their impression, and satisfaction?

While I don't come in direct contact with the 777 much at IAH. I can say that there is NO internal talk at CO about problems with the GE90.

Did anyone watch the 777 program on the Discovery Channel last night? They had an American Airlines 777 with Rolls Royce Trents.

What was it about-AA or the 777? Did they mention why RR? I hear AA's First Class on the 777 is rather luxurious, I've only seen it thru. ads. in Biz. traveller. What were the pilots and crew's views (and lets not forget the engineers' views)?

I think the UK are getting a different Discovery Channel, like the UAE gets with MTV, Eurosport etc.

Cheers,
Alex.
