Using An A320 To Do JFK-STI

Fri Jun 24, 2005 3:41 am

I was just wondering your opinions on whether or not you think it makes any sense to use such small equipment such as the A320 for such a heavy route in terms of pax and cargo. I do this flight alot and find we never get every bag on the plane. Its either a weight and balance issue or not enough room. So for all of you that have this route in your system, how do you all do with JFK-STI and what do you think of our problem? Thanks in advance.

Jetblue-Doesn't your airline block some 20 seats from that flight?

We do b/c of the enormous size and weight of the bags.

JetBlue is the only airline that uses the 320 on the route. American uses AB6's and Delta uses a 763 or a 752. So I doubt other airlines could be much help. Now, if JetBlue used a 319, then it would be no problem and if SHUPirate1's statement is correct, then a 319 would be the best option for JetBlue to purchase because it probably would have 20 fewer seats anyway and could also be used for longer transcon flights that, on occasion, require a fuel stop.

well A319 isn't going to happen. We're just not fitting all the bags on and we're packing the sh*t out of the plane. The average weight of these bags is no less then 50lbs. I just feel you need bigger planes.

I think the best plane for a JetBlue on a route like that would be the 757, but that's not going to happen either and the 321 is even worse for the route than the 320.

How does AA do on that route? Do they have any problems with leaving bags behind? Do they use containers? Thats the worst part about doing the fight is that we don't have containers. I love containers. Makes things easier.

Extraordinarily well. While B6 did dampen passenger yields somewhat (though not much), AA's five daily A300s still do just fine on the route. In addition, the cargo volume that AA hauls on these flights (not just STI, but PAP, SDQ, SJU, etc.) is just unreal.

Not really. A300s can handle just about as many bags as group of 250 people could carry -- even if it is a flight to the Caribbean!

I think it would be in JetBlue's best interest to get a handful of 319's for routes better situated for a 319 vs. a 320 like JFK-BUR, JFK-STI, and for routes in between the size of the 320 and 190. How much pilot commonality is there?

Why would an A319 be better for JFK-STI? If they are leaving bags and cargo behind as it is, why go to a smaller plane? At least with an A320, while you may have to block a few seats on each flight, you can still carry at least some more cargo, which is much more profitable than passengers.

I feel the same way. It's very hard to do a nonstop flight when you have to stop for fuel along the way. That's at least an hour delay in the flight time which will only delay other flights because JetBlue's aircrafts aren't know for staying down on the ground for a long time.

Thats what you need A300's and there container. B6 will never get A319. Its not in there business model. I just can't tell you how inadequate flying A320's down there is. What a freakin pain. I'm mean, the belly is so full that we have trouble fitting gate checks in bin 1 and have to put some in bin 4 which of course barely fit. I don't know. Thanks for the info. guys and leting me vent alittle. ahhhhhhh. I feel better. LOL
