Fri Jun 24, 2005 10:45 pm

AF and Thales signed an agreement for install in their A380 IFE system. The system will be i5000 series. The first a/c to be adapted is the one that will fly from Paris to Montreal and NY followed by Beijing and Tokyo.

according to
http://www.airfax.com/airfax/feature...p?filepath=aug2004%5Csecretlab.htm

Top Series i5000 serves 550+ seats with full video on demand to each seat and does so from one, head-end rack comprising 70 MCU.

According to Thales their offering for the A380 weighs less than the leading competitive product by an astounding 1700 pounds and uses up to 12 KW less.

Top Series offers an amazing 17” seatback LCD display featuring the ability to show video in a 16x9 aspect ratio, targeted for upper class installations.

By offering enough bandwidth to provide a video data stream for each passenger, entertainment options are proportional to server size. In other words, if an i5000 server has 600 GB storage, a passenger has access to 600 GB of data. If we assume one full length movie can be stored on approximately 1.5 GB of hard disk storage, you do the math. That’s a lot of entertainment options!

Thales engineers have tested the i5000 hardware in a wireless mode, delivering up to 260 streams… on an aircraft.

Cheers,

That is cool then.

17" widescreen display is awesome. Maybe they'll use the same display panels that are made for Apple, though those are 16x10...
