Destination Shown On The Nose Gear?

Sat Jun 25, 2005 4:11 am

Someone once told me that some planes have the destination of where there going on the nose gear. Is this true or even possible to do? I think it would be a great idea. Some might think it doesn't make sense I suppose but I would love to see it. What do you all think? Thanking you in advance.

Haha, so they paint it on before every departure? I think this belongs here...

Maybe they were mistaken in describing the LCD screens that they have above the gates at many hub airports that have the flight info, where its going, or where it came from, how long its been sitting there....

Otherwise....it would entertain me to see someone writing it with chalk on the nose of the plane....lol

There ARE often letters and numbers on the nose gear doors, but they are the last 3 characters of the reg. I'm guessing it's easier for the mechs to figure out which plane they're servicing that way.

Back in the old days....way, way back.

Braniff, on their Convairs, used the integrated air stairs.
In the top step, they had a roller (like on buses) in the riser that could change to announce the destination of any city on the network. While the plane was in-flight, before they opened the doors, the F/A would change it to the next stop on the route.

But no, the letters you see on the nose-wheel doors are fleet markings.

Are you sure you are not talking about the last 2 letters of the aircraft registration that are shown on the nose-gear doors and the middle of the nose above the cockpit windows?

It's true! I've seen it many times myself, it's usually written on the a/c just above the nose gear. Here's a pic to prove it...

Ship number actually, at least in the US, as most US airlines have the ship number as the reg (sometimes mfr serial) number or similar.

They may chalk something on the nosegear door if anything but I sincerely doubt that they paint anything on there.

Yea I think that is what you are talking about, I have seen those at airports before and it is pretty cool. When you are out on the Ramp area, you can see where all the planes are going.

Starlionblue- Did you just search in the photo search engine for the words "nose gear"? I would say so judging by the captions in those pictures.

I haven't seen one of these threads in ages. You know....where really bored people start off the dumbest thread to see if any takes a bight.

I'd say you have all taken the bait, hook, line and sinker.

I believe I have seen a CO 757-200 with a reference to ETOPS in letters near the nose landing gear doors. Sometimes some model codes, fleets reference for a given a/c are sometimes seen, for use by rampers, mx.

You saw correctly:

Again, it all comes down to what the individual airlines want to do.

When did I say paint it on????? This is from what someone told me. I never said it was a fact. What I find funny is how this thread is being turned inside out. I know about the LCD screens on the Jetways and I also know about the tags on the nose gear doors, I'm around planes just about 80hrs a week. It was a simple question that seems to be not true from all the sarcasm I had to read. I'm not bitter. It probably is funny from your point of views but all I wanted was simple feed back, not telling me how dumb I am. Blast the workbench guy who doesn't care too much for airline employees. Anyway I hope you all can see why I writing this. Still love the site in all in it. "Paint it on" LOL
