Emirates To Buy 10 A3XX!

Mon Apr 24, 2000 3:57 am

Hi folks!

well, it seems that Emirates will announce on Monday that they made a commitment for 10 A3XX to Airbus if this plane is to be launched.

This is from the french newspapers "Le Journal du Dimanche" and "Liberation".

I think this is one MAJOR step in the A3XX program and I am really looking forward to the launch of this aircraft. Maybe we hear announcements from CX and SIA soon, too.

You only have to replace the () with <> and of course the real address.

Well, I think Emirates predicts that some of their routes will grow enormously over the next years, and I think they can fill these bird by 2005/6 with enough pax to make some routes very profitable.

Just think of the routes to London, New York, Australia...

Hi,

Just a few points:
- This is a commitment for UP TO ten A3XXs, so the airline will, as it has done in the past with the 330s and 777s, dip its toe in the water with about 4 to start with (and it won't have much trouble finding a use for those) and increasing the numbers
- It didn't downgrade on the Aussie routes; the Melbourne route is still a 777 service and its new Sydney route is a 330 flight. It also has authority for Perth and Brisbane.
- It has marketed itself well and has an excellent product; those routes now served by 773s, such as LHR, SIN and HKG, will easily grow into 3XX routes within 4-5 years
- AND don't forget the novelty value. While this may be relatively short term, the airline that is first in the queue will have considerable competitive advantages, even if it is for a short time.

This is excellent news and hopefully they'll come up with more innovations . . .

10 sounds unlikely. If EK wants to throw away money, brag about being the delivery customer, and show off those huge shining fuselages, that'll do the trick, but I think it would be a waste of money in the mean time... I mean, a big waste, I can see them ordering one or two, maybe, but not 10. Oh well, anything's possible!

KLM 777

KLM 777, you make some good points which crossed my mind too.

However, you also have to take into account the growing number of passengers flying to Australia or Asian destinations via Dubai (instead of making a stpover in Singapore, Hong Kong etc.).

After all, do we know how the market behaves in 6 years from now?
Maybe EK puts a 4-class layout in their A3XX, who knows?

Moreover, I think Emirates have done a lot of market research and analysis before arriving at that decision.
It wasn't just a "OK, let's buy this great bird so we get attention"-decision!!

You consistently hit the nail on the head, old chap!!
Any more, and you'll splinter the woodwork!!
I agree, and WT also has a point-their must have been a considerable amount of research/analysis done before this decision (was/will be) made.

Dubai is a nice place to visit as a tourist, although I find these new "nouveau-riche" expats a little irritating, especially when you have to live with'em, pretentious brats....

Alex.

BTW: Tailscraper are you talking of the many russian visitors at Dubai?
The Burj Al Arab is pure crap. After me and my family saw the pics on the internet page we decided not go.

Oh, and just to prove the point that we're all rich here in the Arabian Peninsula, here's the airside part of Riyadh's King Khalid (flying there with BA this June).

To visit my Aunt/Uncle, to go to the beach, to go sand-boarding, etc. They live in a huge compound with pools, cinemas, golf courses etc. Anything's better than staying in the UK, and at least I'm not paying for a hotel.

Alex.
