Webjet - New Brazilian Start-up

Sun Jun 26, 2005 8:49 am

Webjet, a new Brazilian company based on Rio de Janeiro/GIG will start operations until the end of july, connecting Rio to Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre and Brasilia.

Fleet will start with a single 737-300 but they already leased another 737-300.

DAC grant the first part of the license process and it's expected that in three weeks the process will be completed and they will be ready to fly.

Long life to them, Brazilian market needs more companies.

It is very interesting to see how the LCC phenomenon is replicating in different Latin American countries. Clearly this is a sign that our nations have a huge market that currently has no access to air transportation because of the high fares but that can access it if provided with lower cost alternatives. As Filipe says, long life to them. I look forward to reading more details about their plans once they become available and of their livery, service levels, routes and performance once WebJet begins operations.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

BTW, their timetable does not contain any RIO-SAO flights. Wonder why?

But in any case, I hope they force GOL's fares down a bit.

Will Webjet have a proper schedule or keep in the "scheduled charter" vein of BRA and Fly?

Quoting FCKC (Reply 6):

They are cheap if you look at them through the Real-to-Euro or Real-to-Dollar exchange rate, but G3's initial aim as a startup was to rival the price of inter-state buses (the most popular form of transportation for the mid-lower class in Brazil), and it seems that as of late their prices haven't been so far from RG and JJ's.

I guess with that livery, if they go belly up in a couple of months it won't be as hard to place the a/c elsewhere.

PPVRA, They have changed their time table. It was a GIG-GRU-POA-GRU-BSB-GIG flight. Nowadays seems a GIG-BSB-GRU-POA-GIG-POA-GRU-BSB-GIG.
Might be they realize that with one single GIG-GRU they will be not a player. Now the GIG-POA seems to be more effective and will be a non stop flight (only RG and G3 do the same). At same time, it's better to fly a GRU-BSB and GIG-BSB with their high loads and yields. May be with the second plane they start such service (RIO-SAO).

Felipe

That's the main objectives of Gol.
As well as when GOL starts up, the market are quite different. Airlines returning planes, droping routes and postpone deliveres. Gol take a lot of advantage of that moment taking some state-of-the-art 737 and 738 with a very good price. At the same time, Transbrasil collapse makes thinks easier as Gol took the slots at CGH and BSB and use very well internet as it's main sales channel. Vasp and Varig crises as well as market improvement helps to turn Gol as a profit maker. And Gol tickets are not cheap, they made the image of the best price but they are so expensive as JJ and RG.

Felipe,

it is good to remember that DAC (Brazilian Civil Aviation Department) still has some control on fare prices. GOL tried several times to offer reduced prices, but DAC forced them to abort the attempt, the most emblematic episode is the one the happened last year, when after GOL sold thousands of tickets with a huge price reduction DAC, by a request from an old and traditional airline, issued an order for GOL to immediately cease these sales and increase its tickets prices.

I firmly believe that DAC is most of the time in favor of this old and traditional airline, which by coincidence offers several free first class tickets for authorities and their families.

Agree with you JRosa. But if you take a look on Gol fares, you realize that if you buy a ticket 14 days prior to the flight, you will obtain a good discount but after that, prices will be the same of RG/JJ and three days prior, even higher. DAC allows airlines to put how many seats at a given price they want to, if G3 needs to be more agressive in price, just need to put more seats at deep discount fares and it's quite limited nowadays.
The huge reduction is a 50 reais ticket (USD 20, nowadays) GIG-MAO or GRU-MAO (as an example) which we all know its impossible.
I agree that we need competition, but Gol made dumping at that time.

The offers in favor of DAC and other are a bad gift from our past. Hope the future Civil Agency reduces this problem with a more effective external audity and very strong rules for its employees. I don't know how it works on FAA, but i expect they take the best from American, European and other experiences (the good ones).

hahah what the..?

First of all, what kind of STUPID name is "webjet" for a Brazilian airline? 'GOL' wasn't any better but at least it's named after something the locals can relate to.

Secondly, that's one UGLY livery. Is this a joke or something? That plane looks horrible.

Agree. They were very UNhappy in choosing the livery. I can't understand why no one uses Brazil in the name of airline (as Transbrasil). TAM is expending a lot of money just to connect it's brand to Brazil. Tam, Varig, Gol, now Webjet and in the future ???

I bet they saw how much $$$ GOL was making and though "Why not?" And given that G3 is alone in the market, so far, it's another reason for them to begin ops.

But that's just me...

Of course they will. RG is desperately doing all they can to attract costumers. They've always been the most expensive. Now, they lowered the fares ridiculously, with a higher cost of maintenance of fleet, if compared to Gol, BRA... That's suicidal... Poor Varig!  brokenheart

Now, BRA is an entirely comical airline name... "Yes, please give me the 36B seat right next to the lady in 36C...". Can I get 42G in the widebody?  wideeyed

RG will not be hit more than JJ will (probably not much at all). If you still fly RG/JJ and have not switched over to GOL yet, you will most likely not change now. Why shoud you?

I don't know about the higher cost of mx, as G3 also has 733s and does not (yet) make their own maintenance, as RG and JJ do.

PPVRA, you're right. I work very close to BRA's main store on Downtown Sao Paulo and the prices they announce (see www.voebra.com.br) are very close to the ones practiced on Tiete Bus Station (!) (for some routes are LESS than the bus trip!). BRA users are nowadays people that "think" they couldn't get a G3/JJ/RG ticket (bus trip has the same price even if you a buy a 30 day in advance ticket). So i think BRA could (and more than G3) bring to the market thousands of people who is not willing for a two days bus trip Rio-Fortaleza for example. G3 has also announced last week that Biz pax accounts for 65% of all tickets sold in the first 5 months (2005). This is a clear statement that G3 is now a competitor for RG and JJ. People which keeps buying JJ/RG its people like me (if i buy 60 Rio-SP , or 30 round trips, i be graced with 90,000 fidelity points or a Biz Class Ticket Rio-Miami) something that costs about USD 4,000. With a R$ 129 single fare on Rio-SP, final cost for a MIA biz trip comes down to almost ZERO (only taxes). This kind of accounting that several people don't understand and start to use G3 service with a 30 reais discount....but pays for their entire leasure trips more than the discount given!

Felipe

I agree with Brasuca, it's suicide. Gol has something that RG for more than 6 years is looking for: cash availability. They can even present a higher cust for 737-300 as Varig (because of its VEM facilities), but also its good as they don't need to spend money on stocks (for spare parts). The huge RG problem is the financial costs which tooks out all of their operational profit.
If a RG plane needs a new engine (like 6 733 and 1 772 nowadays) will be stopped for some time. If a G3 plane needs it, probably will be replaced in one or two days, keep improving cash generation. With cash, everything is easier as G3 can pay for VEM service at sight with good discounts as RG is in need of cash.

Rgds.

Yea, they're just waiting to put some stickers of thong-wearing locals with red paint on their bodies on there. Please man.. your assumption that I see all Brasileiros as such is way off, and pretty ignorant as well.

If this airline is aimed at "youngers who use the web" perhaps the blob on the tail is a bubble gum or a lollipop? Really, I'm still in my 20's and the name still sounds dumb. What I was saying is that Gol is a much better marketing name (anywhere, not just in Brasil) however, still rather cheesy.

What about TAF, isn't that another competitor or are they gonna stay small?

FLY resumed operations a few months ago, with only 1 727. The other one is rotting at GRU, I think.
TAF had a brief go at expanding towards the south (FOR-GRU I think?) but soon went back to serving only the north/northeast market.

In fact TAF is now only a charter company, not regular operations. Also they are strong at Cargo biz and Postal Cargo (they have an agreement with the Brazilian State owned Post Office). FOR-GRU are used when some groups are sent abroad thru GRU on Delta, Continental, Alitalia, Iberia and other carriers without domestic agreements in northwest Brazil. They operate only 3 old 737-200 (737-248C, 737-230C and 737-241). TAF flies to MCP, BEL, CAY and JDO (not regular and not daily). Cargo routes include GIG, GRU, GYN, NAT, REC, BSB, THE.

Crazyness PU803. And seems that they have to verify this schedulle, POA-GIG today was schedulled for 12:55 and took off at 13:23 (and it's saturday!!!!). Load factor is low: Only 40%. But is the fourth day of operations. Almost a good number get 64 pax from POA to GIG.

Let's see the next days.

All other airlines are offering low prices for WebJet routes.
