Drive up to the Parimeter Fence with a pair of wire cutters and cut the fence open.

The airport authorities don't mind and welcome with open arms plane spotters walking up and down the apron and taxiways. If your really lucky you might be able to do some spotting from the runway.

The security authorities dont mind they will just wave at you and if you ask them nicely as YYZ is such a large airport they might even drive you around the airport to explore the whole apron and see what about to save your poor little feet.

A couple of places that I have found:

1) Right under the landing strip for Runway 24L/R is on Carlingview road. A lot of the heavies use these runways for landing. Just go into the Montana's parking lot, or out behind Aviation World. This is one place where you probably won't be hassled.

2) In the Wendys Parking lot on Airport Rd. This is an ok spot, but with the construction going on right now, it is not the busiest.

3) Fed Ex Hill. If you head down the road by the Fedex facility on Dixie Rd, you willget a great view of Runway 05/23. This is a great spot! Right now however, only planes up to an A320 (size wise) are landing on this runway due to the construction.

The above three spots are accessible by TTC/Missassauga Transit, but you may have to pay an extra fare here & there.

Those are the 3 spots that I have found. There is one down near the GTAA building somewhere, although I have not been down there yet.

Happy spotting!

The good news is that spotting at YYZ has become a lot more friendly as of late. The authorities have backed down considerably in their quest to kick spotters out of certain areas. As was mentioned above, 05/23 is under construction and currently limited to approximately 7,300' so they tend to only send smaller aircraft out there.

Spotting for the 06's/24's isn't as good, but you can try the places mentioned above. The other good news is that the 33's/15's are used more frequently now, and these have great vantage points. For 33L activities, the infield, or then the hills just west of the runway are great. If 15L is being used, then at the north end by the Skycharter hanger is also very nice. You just have to drive around and explore the area a bit, and you will begin to know the places that you like best.

Other than that, get an airport job with ramp access, and the spotting will improve immensely.  Wink

Hopefully you've 1)been to the city and airport before, within the past few years or so and 2)have ready access to a vehicle as well, particularly if you go during the mid-afternoon or later.
