DEN's Runways Originally Shorter

Mon Jun 27, 2005 12:39 pm

Hey guys, looking through Google Maps, I notice that on 35L at DEN, there are old chevron markings and a threshold visible. It appears that the runway length from there is about 8000ft. I never knew DEN's runways were anything but their current length. Anyone care to explain whats going on here?

hmmm ... not sure what to make of this. Although, given the altitude of DEN, I seriously doubt DEN had even planned on an 8,000 ft runway - too short

Maybe the opened the first 8000 ft. first while they were still doing construction. They did that here in CLE.

Thinking back to when the airport first opened is it possible that they planned to be able to open the runway at 8k feet then extend it as the others came online?

Wow that is a sharp observation. I'm a nut for looking at airports in google maps just like the next guy on a.net but I don't think I'd have ever noticed that.

My best guess would be that the threshold was displaced at some point due to construction or repair work & the chevrons were drawn at that time. Once the repair was completed they were removed.

Anybody have any idea when this might've happened? It was obviously after the entire runway was paved or they wouldn't have had anything to paint the chevrons on...

"I never knew DEN's runways were anything but their current length."

You remember they had no 16000-ft runway when they opened.

None of DEN's runways were anything but their current length, including the 16000 ft runway.

I took a look at some other images. I noticed the marks are non-existant in images from 1999, but the most recent, April 24, 2002 have them. The same google images can be found at http://terraserver.microsoft.com in higher resolution.

Why shorten a runway by almost 1/4? Maybe it is an error on the map. If anyone has some 35L photos, I would like to see them.

Runway 17R-35L was shorten for a brief period in 2002 to complete the construction of taxiway EA as it connects directly with the runway.

If you head towards south to the end of the runway, the construction activities due to the dirt and new concrete are noticable. This seems to be towards the end of the construction.

One of the last items done when they built Rwy 16L/34R, was to close 16R/34L for a brief time to install the cross taxiway lighting, signage, etc.
