Questions About SkyWest

To my understanding, SkyWest serves as a commuter carrier for three major airlines: United, Delta, and Continental. I have a few questions:

Is Sky West the only company that operates commuter flights for more than major airline? Does this create any problems re: competition within the company?

Are flight crews dedicated to only one carrier, e.g. can SkyWest crews fly a United Express flight on one day and a Delta Express flight the next?

When looking at their route map, Sky West is a coast-to-coast airline. One could fly from San Fransisco to Washington entirely on Sky West ... Do any other commuter airlines have a coast-to-coast (connected) network?

Nope, there are quite a few regional airlines who operate regional flights for more than one major airline, Mesa and Chautauqua immediately come to mind. As far as problems it would create, I won't be able to answer this until I see how we at ZW will run a split operation between United and USAirways.

First of all Delta Express was the predecessor to Song which was the low cost spinoff of Delta that was replace by song. I believe the answer to this question is that the crews are type rated in a specific airplane, so they could fly CRJ's for either carrier with no problem. Not sure how crews are routed but I imagine most of the flying is for one or the other but they probably do both, and have crew bases likely in the hubs of the airlines they fly for. When ACA did both the Delta and the United flying it was different, since the delta flights were all DO 328 jets, and United was Jetstreams and CRJ's, so crews on that airline were dedicated to one airline or the other.

Mesa is another one. Just looked at their route map and there aren't many states they don't fly currently. Add Delta coming into the mix and this could get really interesting. Not that I respect this company at all, but I find it interesting.

OO does not serve as a commuter carrier for Continental anymore. The EMB-120s they flew are now replaced with Colgan Air's Saab 340s.

ExpressJet (Continental Express) operates from California (BFL, PSP), Maine (BGR, PWM), and most everywhere in between.

ASA could take you LAX-SLC-LIT-ATL-JFK.
Last year when Comair was at SLC, they also offered coast-to-coast service, but have since left SLC (for now). A routing would have been SFO(or OAK)-SLC-BIL-CVG-BGR.

No, it's a very popular game amongst Regionals: Who can fly for the most carriers at the same time Big grin ?
Mesa is very good at it (HP, UA, US, soon DL), just like Chautauqua (UA, US, AA, DL).
Usually there are no real problems involved, as on routes where e.g. for CHQ UA would compete with DL, instead of having Chautauqua fly that route UA would use Mesa, and DL would use ASA.

SkyWest flight crews can fly any aircraft under any airline livery. If you work a 4 day trip- you could fly a day of Delta in and out of DFW, a day of United in and out of DEN, switch back to Delta in and out of SLC, and finish off the trip with United flying in and out of LAX. Everything is exactly the same (ie: uniform, service) with the exception of announcements.
"Welcome aboard SkyWest Delta Connection- errr- United Express flight ...."

edit: Obviously since DFW is no longer a DL hub- you wouldn't be doing flying out of Dallas anymore. This is an example of a trip I worked when I was flying for SkyWest.

It used to be really fun here at LAX when we operated both UAX and DL Con side by side. One of the silver birds would come in after operating a DL flight, then it would be assigned to a UA flight and moved over 2 gates to the UA side. We would have to remember to switch out all the mags from DL Sky to UA Hemisphere or vise versa prior to boarding the flight. FA's would forget which side they were working for that flight, was amusing at times. I don't think many people miss the split ops here. Now the few DL connection flights that come in that are actually operated by OO are ground handled by mainline DL.

Crews aren't assigned to work UA or DL, they may in the course of their trip go between UA and DL systems. Some domiciles see both sides so they may start it as a UAX and end it coming back in with a DLCX bird.

Actually, I was on a Chautauqua ERJ-145 operating as Delta Connection from IAH to DFW a year or so ago, and it was in a generic Chautauqua livery. Even more amusing was that the CD used for the announcements was the one for "US Airways Express" instead of "Delta Connection." The flight attendant kept trying to turn down the volume on the "US Airways Express" parts...

Even more strangely, American Eagle operates as a codeshare partner for other airlines out of LAX; CO, NW, and DL all codeshare on Eagle's flights from LAX. Horizon, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alaska Air Group, operates Frontier JetExpress. Alaska codeshares with most of the network majors.

Chautauqua/Republic seems to be the biggest regional wh*re these days, operating as Delta Connection, American Connection, US Airways Express, and United Express. They also flew as America West Express for a while from CMH. Mesa is close behind being partnered with US, HP, and UA, soon DL, and F9 in the past.

Actually it looks like they still have a flight or two on SkyWest. From tomorrow's flight schedule....

CO 9527 IAH-GRK and return to IAH.
CO 9515 IAH-ACT and return
CO 9535 IAH-ACT.

All list opearted by SkyWest Airlines as Continental Connection.

When I was interning for ACA I jumpseated on a DoJet flight operating out of IAD for UAX (ACA had a couple DoJets is ACA livery instead of Delta). The flight attendant not only had to change all of the inflight mags, but also the types of soda they had onboard. Delta used Pepsi products, but UAL used Coke.

I can understand removing a competing companies logo from the seatbacks (the mags), but the type of soda absolutely boggled my mind. Is it only me or do others think that most pax wouldn't have even noticed that they were served Pepsi on a UAX flight?

Actually, it's not that surprising. The airlines sign contracts with the soft drink makers that require that the manufacturer's products be featured as part of the beverage service. There are ads for Coke products in Delta's Sky Magazine. The airline would probably be in breach of contract if one of their regional partners were serving the "wrong" product. And the customers would notice and some of them might complain.

I thought you guys were done with UA, hence the US financing/contract? Or will there be an overlap period?

ZW starts transfering in August, the 146s will stay through February 2006, so there will be a brief overlap period.

it's the other way around, United uses Pepsi and Delta obviously uses Coke.

My brother is captain for SkyWest and we were just talking about this the other day. He said that although SkyWest has aircraft painted in UA Express and DL Connection, the flights that bridge the UA and DL operational areas are normally painted in SkyWest's own livery. He said DL would prefer that all aircraft have the DL Connection livery, but they don't mind the SkyWest livery making an occaisional rotation through their system. UA on the other hand requires all flight ops between UA cities to be in UA Express livery. The only exception is the LAX-St.George flight which operates on behalf of UA Express, then becomes a DL Connection onward to SLC. This flight is always operated in SkyWest livery.
