Which Airlines Offer Flat Beds?

Wed Jun 29, 2005 12:35 am

I need my fellow a.netters' help to settle an office discussion: which airlines offer flat beds (regardless F or J)? So far we've only found Lufthansa, Air France, Finnair, British Airways, Singapore and Air New Zealand about to start on its AKL-LAX and AKL-SFO routes... But which else? (And if possible, for how long?)

In the U.S., AA and UA both offer lie-flat beds on their 777s and, in the case of UA, 747s. I am not sure if the CO, DL or NW international J products have lie-flat beds, or just nearly-lie-flat beds. Also, IIRC, doesn't US have lie-flat beds in their A330 J cabins where F used to be?

JAL does on the B777-300ER and a couple of 744's. This only in First Class of course and some new business class layouts. In the next years, the whole fleet will be renewed with the new seats.

The flat bed seats can be found on NRT-LHR; NRT-CDG flights, + flights from NRT to ORD and JFK I think...

SAA's flat seats in J on the A346 are truly excellent. They go totally flat and have enough pitch to enable a 6 footer to stretch out. You are supplied with a duvet and pillow and there is no option other than to go to sleep! They are one of only 4 airlines to get a 5 star rating for their seats on http://www.flatseats.com (the others are BA, VS and IB)

I mean the ones that go fully flat. Thanks so much for your responses and the links - this is taking shape!!

Yes they are, but personally I prefer the Millennium configuration on the 744's - those J-class seats are sheer heaven. The flatbeds on the SA A343 and A346 are comfortable, but tend to feel like a doctor's examination table after a while.

I'd like to see waterbeds on airplanes. Now that would be a ride!  Big grin

Swiss offers real beds in their first class of course. In the new business (A 343) they have so called "lie flat" seats. There you are flat but not really horizontal.
