I Miss MY Airport "noise"

Wed Jun 29, 2005 9:35 am

Today, after work, I stopped by the viewing park of my local airport, GRR, to enjoy the view for a bit.

While there, an American Eagle ERJ-145 arrived as did a NWA CRJ. Departing was a NWA DC-9.

My point is...WHERE IS THE NOISE? If I hadn't watched the ERJ land, I would never have heard him. And he turned to taxi off the runway just to my left...with his reverse thrust to my right...and only 100 yards or so in front of me. The engines on those birds are ultra-quiet.

The CRJ was slightly louder with reverse thrust, but when that Ol' 9 took to her element...NOW THAT WAS THE SOUND OF AN AIRPLANE. That's what an airplane is supposed to sound like. That crackling thunder lets you know a workhorse is earning its keep.

I was born in Ohio and until I was 6, we lived under the glide path of CLE. This was back in the 60s when the 707s and DC-8s were frequent visitors as the backbones to most airlines jet fleets. Maybe that is why I don't have a problem with that crackling thunder from those old PW engines.

Is it me, or does anyone else think that the encroaching civilization that then demands that the airport do something about the noise they create (gee, dumb#@%...the airport was here first!) has done a disservice to the airport experience?

If I could have it my way, I'd get the airport authority to let me have a small chunk of land next the runway, buy myself a used-up airframe (like a L1011 or 747) and place here there on that property and hang my "Welcome" sign...home sweet home. For me, that would be living.

I wish you could tell the NIMBYs near CLE, especially Olmsted Falls. They act like they are noisier than a 707.

I personally don't miss the noise near the airport. (I live near the CLE path when the 6's are in use). So long as there is the familiar noise inside the plane. When I'm flying is when I want the "flying" experience. But NIMBYs are, by definition, idiots, and can't understand that the airport was their first.

it's funny, a friend and i were just talking about that the other day watching some videos of 727's taking off, that's what airplanes should sound like.

I know what you mean. At my old hometown airport ( SYR ), evryone is downsizing to RJ's. But there is still a quite a bit amount of mainline's. DL has an MD-88, B6-A320, T9-MD-80;727;& 757's, NW-DC-9,US, 733-734,A319,E170(under US Express).
But US does bring in a couple ERJ's, UA brings in ERJ's and those sexy CRJ 700's, lol, and CO brings in ERJ's so does AA, NW brings in CRJ's to MSP as well. I love to see the mainline better than RJ.

I definetly don't have a prob w/DTW! NW just keeps them DC-9's runnin like a work horse! I love it. Also the DC-10's.

As to noise, I doubt most people miss or want to hear the "old school" noisy birds anymore either inside those aircraft or in their backyards. But I do agree that there is something of an older DC-9-30 or an beater 727-200 Freighter or a DC-8 or older 747 or even a 777 at full bore at take off that still gets attention from fan of aircraft.

Growing up I could open my windows at night and hear the familiar aircraft taxiing around. The DC-10 and 747 with older CF-6 engines make a distinct whining sound while at idle. Also the whine of a JT8D powered aircraft makes her own whine. I learned to tell the type of engines just by the noise I could hear late at night, the rest of the city all quiet.

OK, that is going too far. I live 10 miles from ORD and the planes (mainly older 747s at this point) still are noisy at times. Does that make me a NIMBY? No, it makes me someone who supports noise and environment standards for cleaner, quieter engines so that both nearby residents and the airport can coexist in relative peace.

Growing up in Orange County, CA, my back yard was NAS Los Alamitos - then a Naval Reserve base, but with significant transient traffic from all services. With the main taxiway just a few hundred yards from our back fence, it was a kid's delight, and probably the reason I'm an aircraft junkie to this day.

It was a rite of passage in our neighborhood to jump the barbwire fence on a Saturday afternoon, sprint out to the taxiway in between the Phantoms and Skyhawks, and make it back across the fence before Base Security arrived. When we sat on the fence in safety, the pilots always gave us a thumbs up at having completed our "mission."

Here are the aircraft I remember seeing: A-1D, A-3, A-4, A-6, A-7, B-52, C-9, C-54, C-118, C-130, C-141, F-4, F-5, F-8, F-14, F-102, F-105, F-111, KC-135, P-2V, P-3, S-2, S-3, Lockheed Super Guppy, and countless copters. They were all loud, and we loved it. When we moved there, we knew it was an operating air station, and didn't complain.

I currently live 30 miles south of IAD's 1R, and enjoy identifying A/C as they pass (too far) overhead. My SO thinks I'm a bit nuts.....

Hey GOALLEGHENY...maybe you should live 20 miles from ORD instead of 10. Then you can listen to trains going by your house. There's a lot of those in the Chicago area. So complain about those, will ya?

Want cleaner transportation in your driveway? How bout a Schwinn? Pedal that down to the loop tomorrow morning.
Sorry guy, but the more noisy the planes the better I like them...problem for me is they are a thing of the past.

GoAllegheny, Could you please change your name? When I think Allegheny, I think CV-580's DC-9's & BAC-111's and the thrill they brought to me int he 1970's. A true aviation enthusiast should never complain about jet noise!!!!!!!!!!!!

Used to park on Aviation Blvd. at the end of the LAX runways back in the early 60's and watch the planes with my mom and dad. You know, BIG prop planes, brand new jets!!! There was one heck of a lot of noise, and it WAS FUN!!!

See ya,

Whenever I'm in North Park, Hillcrest, Bankers' Hill, or downtown San Diego, I can always tell when FedEx is sending out one of their 727's - the familiar rumble is almost a thing of the past, and it does emphasize how quiet the new planes are.

If you really want to "hear" planes arriving and taking off, go spend some time at the corner of Laurel Street and Pacific Highway and you will see and hear it all.

Those 727s are so loud! Whenever I'd be outside and hear a very loud aircraft I'd look up, and surely enough a T9 727! And I live in the University Hill neighborhood of Syracuse, a good eight miles away from the airport!

I watch Mets baseball games on TV and once in a while the planes flying over Shea from LGA just don't seem as loud as they were a few years ago when you had 727s , DC9s, and older 737s there. You used to see the hitters, pitchers, umps, fielders, coaches, and fans all looking up often. It used to drown out the broadcasters' dialogue. Nowadays, the planes just don't seem so loud.

Nothing wrong with wanting quieter aircraft. Someone who opposes airport expansion at every turn, someone who makes ridiculous demands, like that airports should be closed 2200-600, someone who moves next to an airport for the cheap property values, then demands airport change, pretending that that didn't know that in the future there might be more flights and the need for expansion, those are NIMBYs. Just saying aircraft can be noisy does not make you a NIMBY.

Just a few minutes ago heard a nice loud engine takeoff over my house. Must of have been cargo thinking DC-10 DC-8? I can tell the difference between some engine sounds. I know when the IB 742 leaves MIA because its the loudest plane in the evening. Its always nice to hear that 747 a maybe25 seconds and than see it appear over the trees and over the house.
Once I was napping around 23:00 and hear a loud rumble. I thought this plane was crashing! I was just waiting the whole house shook.

I was blessed with a childhood living around ANC, lake hood and merril field. I got the whole range of a/c on a regular basis. I can still think back to the NW 747 cargo is silver taking off over the house on 24R, or the range of beavers and cubs on floats coming over. But it was the biggest treat to see the military aircraft coming over from Elmendorf AFB. The f-15s, c-5s and E-3 always got my appreciation.
I moved to a smaller town with tons of bushplanes and i live not 400 yards from the airport and enjoy hearing the reverse thrust on the daily AS 732combi or the roar of the 730am Herc cargo plane.
It will be a wonder when I get old if I dont have a damaged neck from looking to the sky so much.

Hi!

I loved that really noisy jet sound of the old B707 and DC-8's. My goodness, it was really cool to watch them on final approach. Just impressive.
The best thing I've ever heard was an AF Concorde at ZRH. The a/c was there for the 50 years anniversary celebration of ZRH.
As the Concorde lined up on RWY 28, we have been by coincidence very close in a bus right next to the RWY. As the Pilot gave full power to the four RR/Snecma Olympus 593, the windows of the bus got almost blown out.
It was paralyzing to see this beauty taking off so close and listen to the engine sound with the fire inside the exhausts.
This is unforgettable!
Where I live, right below the ILS14 to ZRH, I see and hear a lot of a/c. About 10, I can hear from the noise which type it is. The MD11 is very characteristic. Even the A320 series, the Avros, and the Fokker 100/70 are very easy to hear out.
They Embrear 135/145 is even so silent, it's easy to get them. The A330 with PW4400 engines is kinda similar to the MD11. But the third engine makes it different.
I just love those jet sounds.

Regards,
Patrick

Nothing gets my chest thumping like the deep whine of a 747-100 with its JT-9s at full blast. And what happened to the days when airplanes needed the whole length of the runway just to get up. Now they get halfway down and then climb like nobody's business

Nothing like being 150 ft from the Concorde when it lights up its afterburners for takeoff. I've witnessed this several times here at LPLA (TER). Jamming your fingers in your ears is useless!

Mostly true, but there's a bit of upsizing going on too. The biggest downsizers were AA and UA after 9/11, and US downsizing to RJs on the PIT flights (although that had to do with PIT, not with SYR).

DL, on the other hand, upsized in January from two MD80s a day to ATL to four, replacing two RJ flights. And US its DCA options with two new/replacement 733 flights last year. And I think the CLT flights went from one 734 to two last year as well.
