VIP Clubs In Small(er) Airports

Wed Jun 29, 2005 10:06 am

Which airlines have VIP rooms in smaller, non hub/ focus city airports?
It used to be that DL had a Crown Room in just about every city it served. The smaller stations had unstaffed rooms (called courtesy clubs). I remember I used to get the combination code from the gate agents in places like STL and SDF to get in.

Usually, these smaller clubs are the best ones in the system.

Anyway, what smaller airports still have VIP rooms? (And let's not get a complex by the meaning of small).

Here's what comes to mind:

BDL (US)
SNA (AA, UA)
SAT (CO)

YQR and YHZ all have Maple Leaf lounges, and I think YQB as well.

I've been to the US Airways Club at GSO a few times. Small facility, I've only seen a max of about 5 people in there at once when I've been there. You enter, and to the left is a small lounge with a bar, snacks and CNN, with on the right a reading lounge, work carrols, and a small conference centre. I've been told that in the morning, it's pretty busy, but quiet the rest of the day.

AV has lounges in most domestic stations (of the 18 cities served, only RCH, EJA, TCO, PSO and ADZ dont have) many of this airports are served by the fokker 50s only or have very low frequency (MZL, AXM, MTR, CUC) but the customer base is just so big its better to keep them to make aviancaPlus members happy...

AUS has an Admirals Club and President's Club. AUS is very much the test case for the idea that people will pay a bit more for legacy service - AA hopes to attract a higher paying customer with a local club and with non hub flying to cities like LAX, SJC, HOU, LGA, RDU, etc...

UA has a red carpet club at CLE.. although CLE isn't a small airport, UAs presence isn't near as big as it once was.

I remember those old courtesy clubs of Delta's. There was one in my hometown of Jackson. Dad would show his club card at the checkin counter, and an agent would walk up the stairs and let us in.

There used to be a staffed one at Birmingham, but think that it has gone away as well.

I think the one that would take the cake was the fact that DAB used to have a Delta Crown Room..... It it still there..... back when i worked there and had the good ole master key i'd go check it out from time to time. Not sure when it closed, but I bet it was the smallest airport with one.

BNA has a very nice DL Crown Room.

We had a AA admirals club (leftover from the Hub days) that was a huge 2 story club, but they closed it after 9.11.

BDL has the US Airways Club as mentioned earlier... we also used to have a Delta Crown Room which was somewhat famously known as it was the smallest DL Crown Room in their system, but it was in the old Murphy Terminal and closed when Delta moved to the new terminal. There were rumors that DL would reopen in the new facility, and that AA was to open an Admirals Club... but neither have come to fruition.

It is used by pax on their 3 x daily LHR service, and acts as a contract lounge for KLM pax on the 3 x daily AMS service.

There is also a seperate Diamond Club lounge, for BD's Silver & Gold card holders, and this also serves as the Star Alliance Gold lounge.

NW has had a club at MKE for many years. Now that they are building MKE into a hub again, it makes more sense.

US has nonhub US Airways Clubs at BDL, BWI, BUF, GSO, LGW, RDU, TPA.

In the past year or so, US has closed clubs at IND, LAX, MCO, PBI, ROC, SFO, SYR.

That club got my business when I visited GUM several times. Very nice club too I might add.

Also, CO maintains a nice, very small, but very nice club at SEA.

Speaking of clubs, glad to see AA put an Admiral's Club back into HNL.

And, HSV has a club located on the 3rd floor, Airside just pst security for use by any passengers. And there is no fee. Internet access, private restrooms, bar, snacks. Very nice place. One can see the entire field from the windows there.

MLI has a business center for all passengers that want to be issued a computer access card to get in. The lounge has coffee, cappuccino, bottled water, cable tv, copying machine, free wireless internet, work stations and a comfortable seating area. The card is issued to business travelers that register at any of our airline ticket counters. Frequent flyers rave about the lounge that is located on the terminal concourse near gate B9 and B11.

BA have lounges all over that aren't in London!

As for genuinely small airports, they have a broom cupboard at Southampton for BA Silver/Gold.

Alaska has a Board Room at PDX, and elite members of parter airlines are allowed to use it as well, since AA, NW, and DL don't have club rooms at PDX. PDX's Board Room is pretty nice. It offers a cool view of the C/D gates. Pretty nice staff there, as well.

NW has clubs in just about every decent-sized airport they serve. PDX has one and it is nothing near a hub, although NW has flights to and from Honolulu and Japan.

UA once operated a 1K room at SMF right off of Gate 34, next to the bar. It had a door with a combo-lock and a one-way glass window. The room was pretty small, only having a couch and a few lounge chairs and plants. I think it's now used as a security break room?

Kind of off topic...

The "Ionosphere Club" (Eastern) sign was just recently removed at MSY.
The opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of Southwest Airlines.

MNH has lounge that is not airline specific. The Granite Club.

Considering the terminal is outside and you sometimes have to stand in the sun when busy, a club is welcome.

Just out of curiosity, what are the requirements to get into the Granite Club. I've seen it before, but never been in there...is it open to everyone, or do you just need to flash an elite card...

Yep. Sorry. But MNH would have been a good code. Manchester New Hampshire. I always get that one confused.

Anyway, MHT is probably one of the best small airports I've been too. Concessions inside AND outside security, bright and open inside, a large metal MOOSE statue greeting you, and nice people.

Plus the runway is easy to see from the main terminal and is elevated above the gate level.

DL does have Crown Rooms at airports where they only have a couple of gates - some airports might not be small, but the DL presence isn't huge compared to other carriers: DFW, DEN, MCI, BNA, PHL, PHX, RDU, SAN, SEA (there are others in large cities like Chicago, LA, SF, NY-EWR).
