Tue Apr 25, 2000 3:15 am

I was wondering what everyoone though Emirates is going to order for its narrobody fleet? They have operated the 737 before but that was a while ago. So, let the discussion begin!!

Emirates has always been a very loyal customer of Airbus aircraft and they operate a large A330-fleet which shares a similar cockpit with the A320 and can be operated under the same type-rating so i go for the A320

EK seem to be getting the spotlight at the moment. I'd say Airbus (they might have said something today in Cairo).

Cheers,

Look for a TINY Airbus order: 2-4 a/c.

How much do Emirates pay their PR people? They should sack them all and hire all the airliners.net users who do a much better job.

Not that I'm complaining - it focuses interest on the Gulf which is a great place.

On to business - I think if EK order anything it'll be A320s. This is to fit in with the rest of the Gulf - Kuwai Airways, Gulf Air and Qatar Airways all operate A320s. The only exception to this is Saudia with MD-90s. Don't see EK buying those!!

Also you have to consider line maintenance. All maintenance of Gulf airline's fleets is done by GAMCO (Gulf Aircraft Maintenance Corp.) in Abu Dhabi, and soon GAMCO Bahrain (the new venture). They have considerable expertise in looking after the A320 which is advantageous to EK in the financial and operational aspects.

But in dubai there is a big hangar with EMIRATES ENGINEERING titles on it, so i assume Emirates will don their own maintenance.

Thanks

Until quite recently Emirates were an Airbus airline, they did fly Boeings previously, but it was the 727 (not the 737) But I would have said they would have gone for either the A320 or 737NG. However, nobody can deny Emirates love the 777 and A330, and seem to have gone cold on the A340.

So they could use an order for some A320s to offset some of the cost of cancelling their A340-500 orders (along with placing a few A350 orders?) The A320s have more size flexibility than the 737NG, plus they can flown by the pilots of the next size up aircraft in the fleet, the A330-200. Boeing won't mind too much, because they'll probably make more money from a 777X order than from 737s (which isn't exactly desparate for customers)

That's my prediction anyway, in a few years Emirates will be flying
A320/A321
A330-200
B777-200ER/-200LR
B777-300/-300ER
A3XX (maybe)

With all the speculation around about their A340-500 order you'd think Emirates would put out a statement of support for the aircraft saying they still fully intend to take delivery etc.. they haven't done that...

If memory serves me correctly this is for simple stuff. I think the big stuff like D or C checks is done in AUH.

I may be wrong however, but one hanger sounds a bit small for such a big airline that EK is now. Maybe some maint is done at foreign stations (where do the SR and LH technics people live?)

Both?

Tue Apr 25, 2000 7:53 am

Well, they do operate both 330 and 777, so maybe EK will opt for both?

Well keep in mind that they also operate A300's/A310's and no 767's...

Well....now that you mention it.
Actually, I could see Emirates buying both the A321 and the 737-700.

My first view is that they'll go for the A320, but operating a mixed fleet is entirely within the realm of Emirates operations.

Both? Never.

Tue Apr 25, 2000 4:29 pm

B777-200s and A330-200 are no competitors, as they have just a different size. A32X and B737NG are competitors, so it doesn't make sense to operate both.
I guess EK will order A320s or A321s, but no way a mix as DLX said.

Sndp, ummm the A330 and A32X can not be operated under the same type rating. It may be easy to convert, but one rating does not qualify the pilot to fly the other without a few days/weeks of training.

Udo, I realize that the 777 is a different size than the 332. But having the 332, why didn't they opt for 333s? Commonality doesn't seem to be much of an issue with them. Thus, maybe they'll be crazy enough to buy both 737 and 320.

Sammyk, this is just what i was talking about in a different thread. Pilot330, another member of this forum flies both the 320 and the 330 for his airline in the UK.

DLX, I never said that one pilot could not fly both, all I said was that it was not ONE type rating. I would think that Pilot330 has a type rating for both aircraft. I believe this is very unlike the 757/767 COMMON type rating, where when you are rated for one, you are rated for the other. Are there any other aircraft from two families that have a COMMON type rating, aside from the 757/767? I read a explanation about this in another forum, I will try and do a search for it...

On the same frequency, any word out about what happened in CAI on Monday? There was talk about EK announcing their intentions with regards to the A3XX; anyone out there seen/read anything?

Cheers
Alex.

This may be bordering the irrelevant, but I just thought I'd post these images of Dubai for those of you unfamiliar with the Gulf

Hi Tailscraper,

the French newspaper "La Tribune" reports today that EK will order 5 A3XX firmly and opt for another 5, but NO annoncement was made in Cairo on Monday.
Airbus just participated in festivities highlighting Egypt Air's 20 year-relationship with Airbus.

Airbus now says that they won't get into speculations and that they want to unveil only firm orders for the A3XX if they have enough to do the launch.

Seems that we have to wait a little bit longer...

No announcement was made in CAI. However according to this DJI article, next date to watch is 26 May.

---Article excerpts below---

"We have no plans to buy any new aircraft at the moment," said Ghaith Al Gaith, Emirates Airlines commercial operations director at the Arab Air Carriers Organization's annual general meeting in Cairo on Sunday night.

Asked if Emirates Airlines had made any orders for the A3XX, he said "I cannot comment on that question".
A news conference scheduled for Monday was canceled with no reason given. Industry watchers had expected an A3XX deal to be announced Monday.

Other passenger carriers rumored to be targeted by Airbus as possible A3XX customers are Singapore Airlines, Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific, Air France and Britain's Virgin Atlantic Airways.

Forgeard had said on Wednesday that he would present findings from a recent survey of potential buyers for the A3XX to the board of Airbus Industrie's majority shareholder, the European Aeronautics Defense and Space Company, on May 26.

He had declined to name the airlines involved.
"I think they are going to wait until the Airbus board meeting on May 26 to announce the airlines who are interested in buying the planes," Manfred Neumann, resident manager for Airbus Industrie in Egypt told Dow Jones News Service.

---End of article---

Regards,
Mohammed.

It seems that the A3XX launch is continually being put off. I also wonder why British Airways is mentioned. This particular carrier has been opting for the 777-200ER over the 747-400 why on earth would they want the A3XX?
