Akron-Canton Closed: Possible Bomb!

Thu Jun 30, 2005 5:42 am

My Mom just called from Canton. She said that the radio was saying CAK is closed due to security finding a timing device near the X-ray machines. Has anyone in NE Ohio heard anything?

You beat me to it! Here is what I was about to post!

Cleveland area tv stations are reporting the Akron/Canton Airport - CAK - shut down. I caught the end of a radio report as I was driving home today but couldn't find out any real details. This link is up on the WKYC website explaining that there's a package containing "potential 'bomb making materials.'"

This comes just one day after Cleveland Hopkins - CLE - had the C terminal security checkpoint shut down for over an hour while police investigated a suspected IED (improvised explosive device.)

All in all, not a good couple of days for Cleveland area airports! Does anyone have more info on the Akron situation?

As of about 1800 EDT, the airport reopened and has resumed normal operations.

While in hindsight the situation was determined appropriate to resume service, was that reaction in hindsight as well or is the threat of a bomb at an airport not worth your input more than an emoticon??

I put that there because I knew it wouldn't amount to anything other than the ridiculous fearmongering by the news media. It was probably a suitcase or something someone forgot. Totally not newsworthy. Unless a bomb goes off, it does not need to be covered by the news.

Ridiculous.

WTAM radio was much more intelligent about its coverage. They got a recording of a conversation with the Akron Canton Airport commissioner, who said something to the effect of, "Someone left a suitcase unattended at a security checkpoint. We are treating it as a possible threat and have called the bomb squad and evacuated the terminal. We expect to reopen in 1/2 hour after the bomb squad has evaluated the situation." I heard the story, and the commissioner was calm and collected and sounded very confident.

I wouldn't call that fearmongering. I would call that responsible, both on the part of the commissioner and on the part of WTAM's news team.

PS - CAK is still a very small airport and only has one security checkpoint with two or three lanes. Therefore, evacuation of the entire airport isn't as "big" as it might seem.

I fully agree that a suitcase that somebody forgot in a tiny airport in NE Ohio (of all places) is 'breaking news'. Not. The only responsible thing for the airport to do would have been to store the suitcase at lost and found. Calling in the bomb squad and the media is utterly absurd. Only in America.

Floris -

Another update on this - when they x-rayed the suitcase, they saw wiring, something that looked like plastic explosive, and a ticking watch. The "plastic explosive" turned out to be an ink stamp pad, and the exposed wiring was part of a child's toy (however, why someone would allow exposed wiring on a toy is beyond me.)
