LAX T6 Congestion

Thu Jun 30, 2005 8:17 am

As I usually only use T6 in the evenings, I have yet to come across a time of congestion while going through security screening, and always pass through screening within three minutes of first stepping foot on the escalator.

Are there times in the morning or mid-day when the lines are long? It seems as if the carriers operating out of T6 (UA, CO, DL) don't really have any big "push" times and that the departing flights are well spread out throughout the day.

Waits early morning and noonish can be longer.

The line to security has at times snaked down the stairs towards the ticket counters during peak travel days. The crowds can also be somewhat dependant on what flights UA & DL decided to gate at T-6 which varies from day to day.

The security line at T6 seems to be longer in the mornings when the UA widebodies depart out of T6. Sometimes it is faster to go through security at T7, which is actually between T7 and T6.

On January 3rd, 2004, on a CO flight departing for EWR at 10:30 AM, my family and I waited at least 45 minutes to even be allowed up the stairs to get to the main waiting line, and then another 40 minutes once we were up there. It was insane.

It has its moments, believe me.

Yes, that's right, in the morning T6 can definitely be a nightmare. I've stood in line there for ages a few times myself. That terminal is...interesting.

Interesting is being really generous...

It's a dump, to put it mildly. That terminal is stuck in the 70s and needs to be knocked down and rebuilt. Talk about a time warp to fly out of EWR's C-3 and land in LAX's T6.

Are they just waiting to find out what the go-ahead is going to be with the LAX Master Plan before proceeding with upgrades, or do UA, CO, and DL not care about the facility?

The masterplan really does not have much to do with T-6.

The facility actually was somewhat upgraded already in the 1990s with UAs funding for a new lobby, and a federal inspection facility along with some required gate area modifications.
I doubt you'll see any additional upgrades as neither UA,CO,DL really have a major stake and would not get a good return on any investments.

The only way I could see T-6 receive a major facelift is to have its current tenants move out and have the city or a single new major tenant foot the bill for a significant redesign.

It is too bad that all Skyteam carriers can't take it over and make 5&6 a major facility. The American Skyteam members may not have the finances, but with a customs/immigration facility the combined terminals could make a nice facility for AF, KE and China Southern (as it enters the alliance).

I very doubt you would ever see Skyteam members colocated at LAX. While a T-5/6 option might be somewhat appealing, getting NWA away from terminal-2 is a nonstarter. The carrier is a partial owner of LAX-2 Corp (along with Air Canada and Hawaiian Air) which owns and manages terminal 2. NWA derives handsome revenue from its ownership stake in the facility via passenger fee's and facility rentals from all tenant airlines.
In addition DL's presence contines to weaken at LAX, while CO has been a relatively small player for many years.

Check out the TSA web site for expected wait times based on historical information. T-6 actually has some of the longer expected wait times amongst the various terminals at LAX.
