Gold Coast-Coolangatta Airport (OOL) Closed

Thu Jun 30, 2005 11:17 am

I haven't been able to find any other reports but OOL is closed until at least 1600 AEST, probably because at least part of the airport is flooded - the whole region has been experiencing heavy rains (hallelujah!) over the past week or so and there's reports of severe flooding across northern NSW and south-eastern Queensland. It's been so dry here that when the rains finally comes that the ground just doesn't soak any moisture in.

The radar image right at this minute over Coolangatta looks rather interesting: http://mirror.bom.gov.au/products/IDR503.shtml

Operational Info- AD IS CLOSED DUE FLOODING

Pretty damn damp on much of East coast at present, I am looking out my window at a Road Flooded sign here on Sydney's North Shore.

So according to JQ OOL is not going to reopen today . . . wow it must be pretty bad. Any a.netters holidaying on the Coast?

Be interesting what accommodation JQ can give pax at Gold Coast or Coolangatta, they must thank heaven and earth it is not next week! Wonder if they could just shuttle pax onto BNE? They can just put them on QF flights from there?

Oh are they giving any accommodation?

Wonder why they do not just shuttle them onto BNE and put them on QF flights instead.

My friends are at Gold Coast now

From the JQ website-
1) Jetstar will reaccommodate passengers free of charge to the next available flight, starting with flights on Friday 1 July 2005;

I don't read that as Jetstar offering to put anyone up in the Hilton or even Formule1... more that they will allow change of flight to next available.

Probably because of all the flooding etc they can't. Plus more than likely QF flgihts are running late. I can't remember the last time it was raining consistently and heavily in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne at the same time.

It doesn't normally rain that heavily.

Spoke to my friends. Jetstar is paying for their accommodation tonight at where they were staying last night

I thought the airlines needed to compensate for delays like these? It's their responsibility to accommodate pax who are delayed?

Whole of eastern Oz is raining right now, which is very unusual. God knows we need it! I think QF are not running very much on time this afternoon at all, not surprisingly, and I hear something about Tassie being fogged out this morning!

It shows how desperate we are for rain when no-one is complaining about heavy rains and dreary weather for days on end in winter . . . (I can hear the Albertans laughing at this right now)

Eastern Australia needs more rain.

Heard that Qantas/Jetstar will transport them to Brisbane and put them on Qantas flights tonight

Pictures of the flooding on the gold coast, sunshine coast etc were very interesting. There was a quick shot of an airport/airfield with severe flooding also

Qantas and Virgin Blue have similar arrangements for their passengers too.
