Icelandic Fons Buys Maersk Air

Thu Jun 30, 2005 5:20 pm

Just in on the Icelandic TV Teletext News (directly translated):

"The Icelandic investment company that already owns Iceland Express and Sterling Airlines from Denmark, has purchased the Danish airline Maersk Air. With this new acquisition almost all flight operations from the Danes, with the exception SAS-Scandinavian Airlines, are now in the hands of Icelanders".

How about this news?

This is quite remarkable for a nation of less than 300.000 inhabitants, imagine there are 3 big airline groups here! The above mentioned Fons Group, the Avion Group (Air Atlanta, Excel Airways, Travel City Direct Airlines) and the FL Group (Icelandair, Loftleidir Icelandic, Air Iceland, FL leasing, 11% shares of Easyjet)

I expected Maersk Air to be sold, but not to Sterling which itself is suffering from heavy losses.

Now we only have Cimber Air as a Danish airline. In that perspective it is a sad move.

Interesting however what Maersk Group will do with Martinair if the purchase of Nedlloyd becomes reality. Probable hand of the shares to KLM/Air France..

I assume that Maersk was still part of the Maersk group? Now they have sold the airline, are they going to rename the airline?
Or merge it with Sterling? I do not really know either of them; are they very different companies?

Hi Guys.

Cimber only danish airline ?????? What about DAT , Star Air

Star Air is still in the A.P.Moeller group , so it will still be possible to see the Maersk colours in the european night sky....

What about Sunair? Are they owned/managed by BA or simply operate as BA franchise?

Cheers,
Tom

Both Maersk and Sterling operated charter/leisure routes to Southern Europe for decades. In the late 1990s both airlines were transformed into good quality low-fare carriers and started the Scandinavian LCC "revolution".

If Sterling and Maersk merge it will be a powerful airline with an economic B737NG fleet and a big, well-established customer following. Look out, Ryanair and easyJet, I say... the Danes are coming (with a little help from Bjork and her fellow Icelanders).
Come, fly the prevailing winds with me

What a disappointment to see such a great name leave the realm of commercial aviation  Sad

Thanks CRJ900,
How were both companies doing. Sterling made heavy losses according to a reply above. What about Maersk?

I think it is the the best happening. 2-3 month ago a development company was going to bye both companies to merge them. It was told openly inside the airlines industry. The Maersk people have to thinking different. Before they had a company with ties. Maersk is a company behaving conservative. The new Island guy, well in fact I like him. Representing the new airline in t-shirt and jeans, and some leather around his arm. Maybe I should try to make an advertise, saying "you need me"  Smile

I flew Maersk last month (on a 737-500). Very odd. Their seats are S, M and L. That's Small, Medium and Large. They sell you a 'Small' (which is an ordinary 737 economy seat) and then offer you the opportunity on board to 'upgrade' to a Medium (more leg room) or a Large (a wider seat, I think).

Didn't like it and the interior was dreary. Not an airline I'd hurry to fly again.
