EZY About To Expand In Scotland At Last?

Taken from the EasyJet website:

"easyJet will be launching more of its winter schedule in the coming weeks, including flights from Scotland, Gatwick and Stansted."

For some time now I have known that BAA Glasgow were locked in talks with EZY, hopefully we will see some exciting new daily destinations such as SXF and MAD. 3 new flights from GLA are rumoured, I don't know about EDI,ABZ,INV.

It looks like all the 'usual' routes have been released as they all go through to March 2006. Maybe we'll get EDI-GVA which was considered last year, but as with everything with EZY and Scotland, never happened. Only problem is we don't really need it this year as Flyglobespan will be going daily to GVA.

With GSM now on the scene, and FR at PIK, Scotland doesn't need any LCC expansion from EZY anymore. GSM, FR and to a lesser extent, GRE all satisfy the Scottish demand at present

From what I've been told GVA-GLA to launch operated by GVA based aircraft.

GVA would be interesting as GSM haven't yet laucnhed it in their Winter schedule, so perhaps BAA told them about EZY? I still feel SXF would be a cert as BAA GLA are desperate for a direct link to Germany.

If Easy Jet do expand at Glasgow hopefully GSM won't be hit hard. They (Globespan) may well decide to build up their EDI frequencies more if Easy Jet expands big time at GLA.

The only major issue is probably demand. Isn't the entire population of Scotland only about 4 million, which is about the same as the catchment area within a 50 mile radius of Birmingham? EZY is a business, not a public service. Airlines need to get routes right but they don't always, eg a couple of years ago bmibaby launched EMA FAO daily and CWL FAO 4 times a week in OCTOBER (low season). Not smart. They canned CWL FAO completely and dropped EMA FAO to Saturdays only, thus effectively handing the route to EZY.
Breakfast in BHX, lunch in FAO, dinner in TIP, baggage in YYC.

If EZY were to expand from Scotland they would probably be more reliant on attracting inbound passengers/holidaymakers than other EZY UK bases, because Scotland's population is indeed relatively small. However, as Edinburgh and Glasgow (not to mention the Scottish Highlands) are popular destinations for foreign tourists, I think Easy Jet would be able to pull this off. EZY have a higher international profile than Flyglobespan, so they would be able to achieve this far easier than GSM, in my opinion.

Damian as hit the nail on the head.

Inverness has 6 daily flights to London opertaed by BA, easyJet and BMI. On these flights there is a large proportion of outbound traffic - people going to London for meetings etc.

Apart from Domestic Scottish Flights (IE those operating wholly within Scotland) there's not really any call to go anywhere. It's amazing how many people living in the Inverness area don't go anywhere. Their leisure time is spent in the small locality where they live. My guess is that 9 out of 10 locals don't even know where Bristol is - let alone want to go there.

So, any expansion in the North of Scotland will almost exclusively be for inbound passengers - those wanting to come and see out beautiful scenery and famous monster  yawn
