Next City In China To Get A Non-stop To Europe?

Fri Jul 01, 2005 6:15 am

PEK, PVG, CAN and HKG all have a lot of non-stop flights to Europe on different airlines. (Am I missing any?)

What will be the next city to get one? Maybe Chongqing (CKG), Tianjin (TSN), Qingdao (TAO), Shenzhen (SZX) or Xiamen (XMN)? On which airline?

My guess is on CKG or TSN, hopefully on AY.

Chengdu seems the most likely to become a hub airport for central China according to this article.

Whether that means it will see longhauls to Europe is another matter entirely.

I would think Chongqing or Shenzhen would be tops, with Chengdu coming in a decade or so.

First priority is to increase the number of PEK and PVG flights.

Any word on how CO's EWR-PEK is doing? ($$!)

Shenzhen?  Wow!  Confused I would imagine it is too close to both CAN and HKG to need any direct flights to Europe.

What about north-eastern China like Harbin?

Let's not forget Chinese tend to return home for business and visit relatives quite a lot, so wherever there's a high overseas Chinese population, there'll probably be demand for a direct flight to China and of course the people's home cities.

Shenzhen is certainly growing. Not sure about Europe flights, but SQ now fly there, as do a few of the other Asian airlines.

Tianjin is very close to Beijing (1.5 hrs?) Shenzhen is close to Guangzhou and Hong Kong, so why would either of these places get flights?

here is a map showing Shenzhen's proximity to HKG:
http://www.maps-of-china.com/shenzhen-ow.shtml

I dont know if there are visa issues, flying into HKG to go to Shenzhen, but probably not...

edit: add map

The ferry from shenzhen to HKIA is under an hour, so I doubt Shenzhen will get direct flights. Does it even have an international airport?

Lufthansa and Austrian are actively looking for additional destinations in China. I think Xiamen has explicitly been mentioned. I would imagine that other European carriers, for sure AF/KL, are keeping their eyes open as well.

I've been several times to Chengdu in the past years and, seeing the growing number of business there with european companies, I think it will be the next chinese town linked non-stop to Europe.
Flying is amazing!

Adding to the list, Urumqi (China) is already linked to Moscow (Europe).

i heard Chengdu for LH as well. and some other city. i would not count out direct services to SZX in the future. despite its promixity to both HKG and CAN, the city lies in the Pearl-River-Delta which is probably the fastest economically growing region in the world, with 19% GDP growth p.a.

SZX has got an international airport and serves many cargo airlines. Lufthansa Cargo is involved in a Chinese start-up joint venture called Jade Cargo which will start serving some Asian markets from SZX. the start was pushed back till fall, i think, due to some issues with aircraft ownership IIRC.

I highly doubt that Tianjin is in the high priority list. To get a rough idea what the next Chinese city could, try looking at the cities SQ, MH & MI are flying now (i.e. medium-range sectors) and Tianjin is not one of them.

My money is on Chengdu or Xiamen.

Yes, it's very close, I flew PEK-SZX when I was going to Hong Kong and took the ferry. But the problem is, SZX and Hong Kong are on different "visa zones" and there are customs and immigration in between them. People usually don't like to clear them twice, if there is possibility to do it only once.

Singapore Airlines if flying to both HKG and SZX, by the way. (Yes, it's not a long-haul flight but still.)

This is getting interesting! Maybe the next city in fact will be Chengdu.

Really? I couldn't find the flight on OAG even though it should include all the airlines. I have to check the Aeroflot timetable I have back home.

Chongqing had a weekly LTU-nonstop service in the past (from Duesseldorf, Germany).

But my vote for a new nonstop connection between Europe and China goes to Shenzhen...  Smile

Urumqi has no Moscow service, but it does have service to Novosibirsk, in Russia.

According to the website http://travel.airwise.com/schedules/, there is a current (July 2005) bi-weekly flight Urumqi - Moscow (Sheremetyevo) with China Southern Airlines (who took over the China Xinjiang Airlines flight that used to exist). The flight CZ6001 leaves Urumqi every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:55pm, arriving at Sheremetyevo at 7:55pm after a 5 hour non-stop flight. The plane is a 752.

My old OAG from 2002 shows the flight as weekly with China Xinjiang Airlines, flight XO701, also with a 752, but 8:40pm to 20:25pm.

I agree that Shenzhen is the next likely city to get flight to/from Europe. It may be close to CAN and HKG, but it has a major economic life of its own, and average annual growth has exceeded 20% for each of the past 20 years or so.

And Novosibirsk is in the Asian part of Russia, not in Europe.
