What US Airlines Flew During Desstert Storm,

Tue Apr 25, 2000 10:56 am

I read an article that there were alot of 747s flying troops to the Middle East during dessert storm. What 747s and what airlines were they. I knew that among them were Tower 747-100 and 200 aircraft and TWA 747-100 and 200 . I would also like to know what airlines were used during war time of ww2 , Korean, and vietnam wars. What airlines would be most likely used if (go forbid) that the US declared war on another country.

Northwest and ATA also went to desert storm.

Every major US airline has taken part in transprtation during every major US conflict. During WWII, the Air Transport Command was initially madeup of almost entirely airline pilots and aircraft. These men flew across both oceans, South America, the Artic, and across the "hump" into china and burma.

For a great story about this facinating bit of history, read Earnest K. Gann's "Fate is the Hunter."

Pan Am also flew troops to Desert Storm. Apparently doing that helped keep them flying for a while.

United flew many, many missions over to the Middle East, using (I believe) all types of 747's in thier fleet, excluding the 747SP.

I remember seeing quite a few UA 747's at El Toro MCAS (near SNA) back then, loading up for flights to Brussels, which was used as the staging ground for many (if not all) of UA's gulf flights.

Quite a scary thing to see, which grew even worse when some of the 747's would return to base with bullett holes in them.

Wasn't a British Airways 747 carrying troops hijacked or something?

I used to practice tang soo do with John Kalitta, right about that time. from what i understand, they made such a killing from the troop movements, that they were able to pay off all their newly acquired 747's.

No Hijack But

There was no hijacking but a 747-200 from BA was blown to pieces at Kuwait Airport at the beginning of Dessert Storm. The aircraft was written of and nothing was salvagable due to the searing heat and the fire.

CO also flew many times to and fro during Desert Storm. At that time CO still operated nine 747s; one of which (maybe two) had a large yellow ribbon painted over the L2 door.
