West Colombia Suspends Operations For Two Weeks...

Sat Jul 02, 2005 9:42 pm

West Colombia suspends operations for two weeks:

http://www.wca.com.co/images/supe5.jpg

The article is in Spanish, but it says that besides its financial problems, West Caribbean also has some problems with some of its planes and need to take them into maintenance.

The airline is not taking any more reservations and it will refund any customer who ask for the money back, but Avianca, Satena and Aerorepublica will cover its routes in the meantime.

The article says that these are the routes:

BOG - ADZ - BOG
BOG - MED - BOG
BOG - EOH - BOG
BOG - PTY - BOG
ADZ - PVA - ADZ

The last one, ADZ - PVA - ADZ is the most critical because is the only mean to get from the tiny island by air, so it will immediately be covered by Avianca. AV will also take care of all the charter flights and P5 and Satena will take care of the other routes.

Question:Are these all the routes that West Caribbean currently has? I flew BOG - AXM - BOG a few months ago...

West also has a bunch of regional routes from EOH, the were also operating BOG-MZL, CLO-ADZ, CTG-ADZ, BOG-CLO and CLO-MDE, MDE-PTY, BOG-SJO and they had the West Costa rica subsidiary but dont know the routes of that airline, also, West was not flying BOG-PTY and BOG-AXM was cancelled a few months back.

Very sad. They applied their new and very very nice livery only months ago. And from outside it looked like a new Latinamerican player would be born.

I hope not , but it seems that this is the end of it .

In Colombia they argue that the owner spended the money that was for the airline in a hotel located at san andres colombia.

What aircraft will Avianca use on this route? Can they operate with the F50 at PVA or did they subcontract somebody else?
Thanks for information and kind regards

I have the same question, I think it has to be the F50 I can't think on other option for PVA Airport..

Quoting Avianca (Reply 4):

I flew 4 times with them and the service was pretty decent, I mean, nothing over the top, but they were punctual, planes in good (apparent) condition, very good rates and as Chiguire said, the new image looks very good.
I hope they can figure a way out and it will not be their end, but I am afraid it doesn't look good...

and they had the West Costa rica subsidiary

Do you think it will affect West Costa Rica and West Aruba too?

Indeed. They have lost the feed from colombia plus the capital to fly.

No, I don't think so either.
After being grounded I have never seen an airline start-up again. VIASA, Sabena, Swissair.... once they are on the ground it's over.

Yes, it's sad, but others will come and others will go, let's hope, for the sake of us passengers, that we remain at least with 2 decent airlines always.

The thing I hate the most about West's demise is that fares will undoubtlessly rise, especially on their former MDE-BOG route, and all the employees that will be on the street again.

I flew with them a couple of times, and service was OK; in fact, it was much more than what I expected for the ticket price. Service and attention-wise they were pretty much on-pair with Avianca and AeroRepublica, the added value of these two companies is, however, the added frequencies on each route.
