Satellite Photo Of AirTran 717 Taking Off

Sun Jul 03, 2005 12:53 am

I know alot of people have seen the google maps feature. It's pretty sweet. Anyway goto http://maps.google.com/ and enter MCO, check on runway 17/35 you can see the same 717 taking off as the satellite scans north to south. You know the aircraft is departing as the southen most shot shows a shaddow of the aircraft on the ground. Pretty sweet.

I don't see the shadow.

I do see the same plane on the runway three times, pretty sweet!

Yea, it is a sequence of photos of the same plane on it's take off roll. Kinda neat. I can tell you this.... Not all of these photos are current. I just looked at our hangar, and the photo is a few years old.

Mighty sweet. Pretty impressive resolution for free. I guess if this is what they give the unknown masses for fun I guess it really is true the the military can read someones newspaper from space.  Smile Gotta love technology.

Check this one out...there's a Concorde at JFK in its satellite photo.

Was that a normal place for it to sit between flights?

Or Korean-- cargo, maybe?

Like he said, ATL runway 8R has three aircraft on it too. But no reason to assume they're the same aircraft, there or at MCO. No reason to assume they're satellite pics, either-- note the freighters north of ATL runways 8, which are sunlit from the WSW, which suggests (at least) that that part of the pic was taken from an aircraft.

In the Orlando pic, see how weak the shadows are? Like there was a thin cloud layer? So probably the camera was beneath the clouds?

This is cool. BTW, here is Anchorage's Airport:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=orland...24&spn=0.004882,0.007522&t=k&hl=en

The perspective on this one looks odd, like it was taken on edge. I guess the satellite in down close to the equator.

There's a Finnair MD-11 at gate 32 in HEL:

The satellite imagine doesn't show the new are of the terminal that opened last autumn, though.

When I looked at the satellite shot of ORD I spotted a Star Alliance 767 with UAL colors on the forward fuselage. You can see the plane just south of the terminals on the taxiway

This imagery has been around for a while and was even discussed in another thread (as always). Regardless, Terraserver has the highest resolution satellite photography.

Compare this:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=sfo&ll...55&spn=0.005168,0.007522&t=k&hl=en

To this:

http://terraserver.microsoft.com/ima...x?T=4&S=8&Z=10&X=11109&Y=83279&W=3

But for more fun, check out the new Google Earth app:

http://desktop.google.com/download/earth/index.html

You can browse maps three dimensionally and fly up and down runways, through mountains, etc.

Have fun!

Sydney

Melbourne

There are not as many detailed maps over the world. The USA is very detailed, I beleve the rest will come to.

Much of the US photography is from aircraft, but maybe all the foreign pics are from satellites? Which could be why the best US pics are more detailed than the foreign.

Did anyone notice at JFK the DC-10 on the overrun area at 22L???

I looks like a FedEX plane with emergency equip around it.

That is an Air France Concorde and yes it did park out there mid-day.

The picture of JFK was taken at different times, because the pic of T6 has no planes and it, yet the T5 pic is newer because it has a B6 A320 pulling in from the taxiway and it is cleared out (TWA was still at T5 when jetBlue started). Also the B6 Hangar NW of AA T8 is being just about to be started (being cleared) so the T6 area is old and the rest is newer by maybe 3-4 years, but it is same kind of shot (The quality)
