A380 Heading Off On Asian Sales Tour

Tue Jul 05, 2005 5:33 pm

May be another thread on this, but anyway just reported in the Australia media that the A380 will be visiting Australia in the near future. An Airbus spokesman was shown saying a detailed itinerary will be drawn up in the next few months.

I imagine there will be a fairly extensive sales tour of most countries in between. Couldn't see any details on the Airbus site though.

It was also interesting the Melbourne airport fire chief stated they will roster extra fireman every time a whale flight is due. Wonder if that will be normal for all airports.

makes sense.... obvioulsy its a bigger fire and more emergency response teams will be needed to evacuate/assist a greater number of passengers, heaven forbid an accident/incident...

Presume the big girl will stop in Dubai on its trip down through Asia if not the Dubai Air Show.

Even if it is this doesn't mean more costs. One A380 is equivalent of more than one conventional aircraft in terms of amount of pax and therefore airports will need more staff and tools.

Question is if this will result in savings or extra costs in the bottom line... (per pax that is)
There's still a long way to go before all the alliances deserve a star...

If it increases peak demand for such resources then it increases costs as you have to satisfy the peak requirements at all times. Presumably A380s are going to increase capacity at slot restricted airports, so one would expect certain costs to rise with that increase in capacity.

Good to see that airbus are not just sitting on their arses and waiting for the customers to come for future A380 orders. They'll be doing a good job by showing airlines what they could be buying and how it would benefit their airline.  Smile

So anybody care to guess which airlines in Asia (which are not already customers) qualify as A380 viable?

Has the 2nd A380 been rolled out of the factory yet? If so, has it flown?

EKGOLD

You are right , it makes sense to go to Australia after the Dubai Air Show.
In this case it will be there in November in Emirates cs.

No , the second frame hasn't flown yet.Surely it is completed and maybe painted.

Since I couldn't make Paris, it had better be at Dubai!  bouncy

But during such a sales-tour the a/c will not fly from X to Y fully loaded with pax or make pleasure flights with a full load of pax - or am I wrong here ?

Couple of random thoughts on the proposed trip.

1. Whichever of the 4 prototypes makes the journey, will it be configured in the layout of its ultimate owner, or will Airbus splash out on some concept designs to impress the natives, e.g. shop, conference centre, exercise area, bedrooms etc?

2. Airbus no doubt want to confirm payload/range characteristics asap. Are long range "proving" flights still necessary for this, or can the onboard computers confirm performance after the first few flights. Alternately will one machine shortly be doing laps of the Mediterranean?

Would the cabin interior be finished or half finished to give the potential customers a taste of reality in terms of cabin features and available amenities? I know that they have mockup cabin but a real cabin would feel much more realistic.

See Reply #32. I think they will be using that one if they have any brains.

Obviously, they have started some NAMs testing, and are basically trying to "kill two birds with one stone", by doing some advertising at the same time.

With this oversize wing, the current model should do just fine in any NAMs or payload testing exercise, so expect good news on how the airplane exceed prediction.

What Asian cities will it visit on its way to Australia?

Will it visit NRT, HKG, and SIN?

Maybe it would go to Japan (BIG MAYBE), Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, KUL, and India. There are still a few Asian carriers that might have interest. Air China has not ordered, right? Malaysian hasn't ordered and only one carrier in India has done so.

But... as they are saying in the other thread about KLM and the A380, airlines won't buy it if they know they can't fill it. Those that are buying it are putting in luxury. Maybe some carriers want a plane of that size but are afraid that if they can't fill it with full fare passengers it will become a problem and not a solution. This tour could really help there. We all know that First and Business pay for the plane in the end, but the majority is still Y. IMO, The plane has to be profitable with all three classes. This is hard, but if Airbus can prove it...you might see some more operators signing on.

CA, CX, MU, CI, & BR are all possiblities, with the former three strong candidates. OZ could be included but similar to KLM they have only a handful of 744 all-pax versions.
Airbus could send the A380 to Japan but not sure what good it will do.
JL is in no hurry for an order and NH is hardly interested.

Why would Airbus need to bring the A380 here to Oz for sales? It would only ever appeal to 1 airline, and, oh, last time I checked, this airline has quite a few A380 on order already!

Methinks it probably would've gotten here as a test flight and perhaps for Dixon et al to walk thru one. It would be fantastic to see it here in SYD!!!

They need to send it around the world for the public to get jazzed about it.

Unlike the 772LR, this is a new product, and the public knows about it, even casual flyers. When it makes the newspaper or local news report, people in the pubs talk about it. I've seen it happen here in LA two times. It gets in the paper, then at the local watering hole, people talk about.

So the world tour is a "look at our plane. it's an Airbus." goodwill tour.

The 772LR, on the other hand, is flying to see potential customers, not pax. B needs to prove it is worth it and useful enough to buy. One reason it's making it's world tour much sooner in relation to first flight. That and the airframe is already proven in 4 other versions, so there is less risk.
Of all the things to worry about... the Wookie has no pants.
