Kenya Airways: Bombay Overflowing With Jews!

Tue Jul 05, 2005 9:27 pm

This is hilarious!

According to Kenya Airways' Bombay Destination Guide:

When to go:No matter what time of year it is climate should not be a key reason, most fraction of the country is always enjoyable. You may desire to keep away from major Jewish holidays, because it fills up with pilgrims and room prices go up and travel is nearly impossible.

It sorta makes sense if true. Is Bombay a popular vacation destination for Israelis? If so, the statement is prefectly clear. it's no different than avoiding Florida during the Winter school holidays in the US.

Airbazar, they talk about Bombay overflowing with Jewish pilgrims, not holiday makers...and the last time I checked, Judaism has no holy sites in Bombay, let alone the whole of India........
Kenya Airways should be ashamed of themselves for posting such an ignorant, and factually wrong, statement......

That is rather true, There are thousands of Israelis in India at any time. they are mostly there for trekking and vacationing but I never saw any perticular excess during Holiday times. Israelis just love going to India... That's all.

Well, judging from the numerous English mistakes on that webpage it is possible that they have picked / translated the wrong word!

Have a look at the destination guide for Hong Kong ... and the lengthy visa procedures for Hong Kong'ers on certain passports to get into Switzerland (ironically, they dont fly to Switzerland)!

So I would take everything there with a (huge) pinch of salt!

US330, you need to check your facts. India has been a home to different Jewish communities for hundreds of years. Ever been to Cochin? One of the oldest sites of Jewish heritage in the world followed by later merchant communities in Calcutta and Mumbai...

YES. Thailand as well. Lots of Israelis go there after their Army service.

India has been a home to different Jewish communities for hundreds of years.

Still is. And there are many Indian Jews in Israel, and even some in the US.

I think the topic title is misleading, as it does not state exactly what is on the page. There are many reasons to avoid any city at a certain time in the year, and we shall not make a big fuss out of this one just because it happened to be in regards to a Jewish holiday. Why do things have to be blown out of proportion when they have a jewish connotation?

What about agreeing upun avoiding travel during certain Christian holidays? We can start with Christmas.

Then we could also free up a lot of air space by avoiding all those heavily overloaded cargo flights from Greenland to all over the world.

It is a typo for sure.

I'm a Jewish American and have never heard of Jews going to India except casually as tourists, as people do from all countries.
There are no Jewish pilgrimage sites in India (there aren't really pilgrimage sites in Judaism at all except for the Western Wall in Jerusalem).

The line from the Kenyan Airways guide is definitely referring to Jerusalem -- that is the only city in the world where it is noticeable that it is the Jewish High Holy Days (not even in New York could a non-native tell)

Sad mistake but not to be taken too serious. It is just a mishandling of words. I think there was no pun intended.

As a Jew myself,I never heard of any holy place in India.
But IMO means as during The Holidays people don't work, thus having extra time to spare, they plan trips(for example, the famous ''Chol Hamoed Trips!!), and as abovementioned, India is a popular destination, so that would explain the ''overflowing'' of tourist.
So...
People with money + Nothing to do + Interesting and cheap place not so far away= Full planes to that x place.

Just because you haven't heard of Jews in India doesn't mean there is not a Jewish community in India. In fact, until the 1950s, Mumbai was home to a very large and thriving Jewish community. However, when Israel was formed in 1948, the population largely migrated to Israel.

Today's Jewish community in India is still centred in Mumbai. It is not as large as it once was, but it is more significant than it's small numbers suggest.

Having just experienced it, one should also avoid St. Bertha's Day in Washington. The place was overrun; she must be the patron saint of firecrackers and sky rockets. I wonder if Kenya Airways knows this?

Indeed. There was an Indian Jew at my passover seder this year and he was saying that when people meet him, he hears "So when did you convert?" all too often.

Jewish communities in the Far East fascinate me. I met another Indian Jew last year whose family traces their lineage back to Baghdad in the 1500s. On a separate note, there was an article in the NY times a few years back about an American Catholic businessman who was trying to resurect the ancient Jewish community in Shanghai. Not resurect as in bringing Jews to China, but exploring and restoring some of the old buildings, etc.

Absolutely correct! In fact, I got to know a very nice Indian jewish girl in London, who told me a lot on how their community has interwined into South Asian Culture.. there are also communities in CCU (armenian jews as well as orthodox) and other cities..

back to the topic..: I agree with the Thread Starter and other comments, the comments are maybe a little far-fetched: I have never seen a disorder here during Jewish Holidays (rather there is a permanent disorder here Big grin )

Last heard the community in Cochin was down to about 15!

But one of Cochin's foremost tourist attractions though - the synagogue I mean. But you are likely to bump into more Israelis in some of the drug hangouts in Himachal Pradesh than in Cochin though - if recent media reports are to be beleived. There is even a rehab centre there as well!

Rajeev, you are absolutely correct. When I was in Goa in January, I had to visit the police for reasons I do not want to emphasize on, and they told me that a considerate number of Israelis are spending 7 years plus in prison. While it was easier to get away with bribes in the past, Indian police has become rigorous nowadays - bribing is not always possible. Himachal is similar. Imagine what would happen if India had the same draconian laws as Singapore in that regard!

Oh come off it! Did you even understand the purpose of my posting this? I suspect not.

Bombay is not overflowing with Jewish people, no matter what KQ have to say. That's the funny part!

There are Jews living in Bombay, certainly. And a now disproportionately large nymber of synagogues. But that's more a remnant of the past than an indication of the current Jewish population in Bombay.

Lots of Israelis do come to Bombay all the time - El Al have several flights between TLV and BOM - but most don't stay here very long. They're usually off to the mountains in the north, where entire villages have been converted into little Israels. Restaurants with Hebrew menus, serving Israeli food, cooked in kitchens with rabbinate approval, Hebrew shop and road signs... the works. And a big drug problem.

One of my best friends here in Bombay is Jewish. I had got a lot of information from her on this subject a few months ago and passed it on to RJPieces. I'm going to ask him to explain my point - maybe you'd feel better if it came from him?

I believe this post was meant to be more tongue-in-cheek rather than promoting any "agenda". It was just an amusing comment that was noticed on an airline website. Nothing more, nothing less. At no point has anything been blown out of proportion...yet (surprisingly enough).

My friend told me about 5,000 in BOM (no idea about CCU, COK and other cities)- no idea how reliable this is - If I was in my Uni library now, I could check out, there is lots of stuff written on this by Anthropologists

Recently, some Rabbi visited some tribe in the North Easrt and declared that they are old ancestors of Jews in Israel. They got the permit to move to Israel. Interesting immigration policy

Lol.

From the website somebody linked above:

In March 2005, Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar decided to recognize the members of India's Bnei Menashe community as descendants of the ancient Israelites. The Bnei Menashe community consists of close to 7,000 members of the Kuki-Chin-Mizo tribe, which lives in northeast India near the border of Myanmar (formally Burma). For generations they kept Jewish traditions, claiming to be descended from the tribe of Menashe, one of the ten lost Israeli tribes that were exiled by the Assyrians in the eighth century B.C.E. and have since disappeared.

I found this interesting, that they continued Jewish traditions. Even to this today, there are many "Marranos" who are Jews who were forced to convert to Christianity during the Inquisition but secretly kept Jewish traditions. Every now and then you read a story about a person in a random place like New Mexico(that was the last one I read) that finds out that all of the traditions he has followed his whole life are Jewish ones.....

And for those of you surprised by there being Indian Jews, check this out:

Hahahahahhaahah!

It looks like someone at KQ's been reading Anet!

They have changed the Bombay Destination Guide to read:

When to go: The period between October and February is the most pleasant time to visit Mumbai, when the city enjoys a balmy season of blue skies and a cool breeze. From March, the temperature gradually rises and the humidity reaches saturation point. It is very hot just before the monsoon rains break in mid-June. The rains last until September.
