Pan Am At IAD

Tue Jul 05, 2005 10:36 pm

Does anyone know what gates PA used in the midfield. I was on the people crusher...oops, I mean mover the other day and I heard on the their radio something about "it looks like its one of the old Pan Am gates". I figured I would go exploring next time I am at work.

Are you talking about Pan Am 1?

I don't think the mid field terminal was built when they where still flying.

Yea, Pan Am 1. Are you sure? I swear I heard airport ops talking about the old Pan Am gates. Maybe I was hearing things though. I think the gates were built in '82 maybe give or take a year.

I believe they used a hardtand and mobile lounge to IAB...this is what I vaguely remeber from a FRA-IAD in 1988

The International routes were transported from Friendship International Airport (now BWI) when IAD opened.

They did use hardstands, and board from the terminal- in 1988 I flew IAD-FRA-IAD, and hardstand outbound, and hardstand inbound right to IAB.

Add Mexico City to that list also.

I've flew twice via IAD during the late 80s using Pan Am. One time indeed was a hardstand using the people mover buses, however another time the LAX A310 flight definitely was parked at a gate using a jetway.

IIRC they were parked on the east end of what used to be the midfield hardstand where United's transatlantic flights now depart from, back when aircraft would parallel park and the mobile lounges would pull up to the aircraft.
Airplanes are cool. Aviation sucks.
