Webjet: No Chance Against Gol?

Wed Jul 06, 2005 4:15 am

Webjet has its website up and selling tickets at www.webjet.com.br. They are working with a single price. GIG-BSB for example is $238 reais. GRU-POA is $214 reais and GRU-BSB is $205 reais each way.

Advance purchase lowest fares on Gol undercut all these Webjet fares. GIG-BSB can be had for as low as $194 reais each way, GRU-POA for $149 and GRU-BSB for $186. These fares are available only on one or a few departures on Gol. But then Webjet is at this point a one plane, one frequency per market shop. Gol on the other hand has an ever growing fleet and a wide variety of departure times at slightly higher fares. Gol is a reconized brand too. Webjet needs at least some ordinary revenue management with multiple fares to have a shot at surviving, and even so that is a long shot.

Looking at their schedule, I would be very surprised if they can make those 20-30 minute turnovers as they scheduled. It's just too aggressive for an airline with one airplane.

Webjet will not pay to Agents so they have no access to almost 70% of Brazilian market which could become a problem on start up. Also, as Incitatus said, they offer only a single flight GIG-POA, GIG-BSB, BSB-GRU-POA, GRU-POA, POA-BSB. Let's see how their marketing works.
With R$ 10 mm on cash, they probably can be aggressive during some months.

They are ex-RG/Nordeste 733s. That's the plane in RG's colors:

Recognize? I do.

Their future does not look too bright to me, especially with BRA starting up much stronger then them very soon.

WebJet will begin operation on 12 July, that's in 5 day. That's all for now.

First flight, where to? CNF, GIG, POA?

Varig has just announced special fares for the same routes operated by Webjet: GIG-POA, POA-GRU, GRU-BSB, BSB-GIG and BSB-POA. Prices are quite the same as Webjet.

Unfortunately I have the same feeling. I don't know why, but do you remember that airline that started operations almost at the same time of GOL, but then failed to continue operating, that NACIONAL airline?
I sometimes associate Webjet's success to this airline... Just hope I'm very wrong...
Their timetable seems too much to be operated with only one plane. And as I heard that the second 737 will come only 60 days after the first flight, I believe they'll have a hard time in this very beggining.
I do hope they get more planes and become a consolidated airline in the future.

At least one of them is leased from global aircraft lessor AWAS.

MSN of the AWAS aircraft is 25057. Was previously with Nordeste and TransBrazil.

At least Webjet seems to be paying their lessors, unlike Varig.

Also AR, and you could pay in 10 installments without interest ! Seems we will see more competition on EZE-GRU/GIG. 19 flights per day Brazil-Argentina seems to be excessive.

But they probably paid several months in advance or obtained a bank guarantee. Vasp puts Brazilian airlines in a more expensive degree.

RG did not stop paying their lessors. They are not flying "for free." It's just the previous debt that was put on hold.

They are paying for airport fees on a daily basis, and until a few weeks ago for fuel on a daily basis also(IIRC, numbers were at about USD 1.6 million/day). Now they have a week or two of credit for fuel.
