3 People One Way FLL-BDL...selectee?

Wed Jul 06, 2005 1:00 pm

Hello...
I have FINNALLY booked my one way ticket to college...(mixed emotions Big grin  Sad) The dates and airlines don't matter right now...but my question is that my family will most likely be traveling with up to 9 checked bags (airline limit for 3 people) and probably 3 carry on bags. What are the chances of being selected and how is the FLL security staff at handeling selectees...in concourse D? I have expirenced FLL security, but never at FLL or with the amount of bags I'm traveling with. Any tips to try to minimize the chances of being selected...it would really help as with the maximum amount of bags, it will be a real hassle. Also, do they screen selectees checked bags?

Finally, on the return for my parents...jetBlue LGA-FLL...we've been selected there before, and they are MEAN...I mean they treat you like a terrorist and they treat everyone else like saints! I guess the same tips apply, but anyone have tips (in general) on being selected?

i meant hand search, sorry. BTW, i found out my bag EWR-FLL was hand searched. The bag was a mess already, so I don't know what caused it.

FLAIRPORT,

Not sure if your talking about hand searching carry-ons but if you are they usually tear them apart...

yea, the reason I'm so worried is because i'm going to have SO MUCH STUFF as I am basically moving. When I come down to visit, a carry on and a checked bag will do it, but I will probably have to maximum the checked bags, with a few bags flying empty, so I can fit all the stuff and espically for the return!

If they did hand search your checked suitcase, you could just drop them off and not worry about it, no?

If you're talking about being selected for special TSA screening, then I don't think you will just because you booked one-way.

I've booked one-way flights out of DCA on the shuttle a few days in advance and was not selected.

The only time I've been selected is when I purchased a one-way ticket on the Shuttle at the airport.

Might want to double check this as most airlines only allow 2 checked bags per person at least for free. Same with carry on bags 2 is the limit for the majority of airlines.

Being Selected is completely random however certain things most of which people know can give you a better chance of becoming a selectee. Also if you act like a spook when checking in the agent can make you a selectee.

Why I use the keiosk! I'll never let my dad use it again though and when I go home from CT, I'm using the skycap!

If money isn't a factor, a baggage shipment service like www.luggagefree.com can solve all these problems for you.

Why not just use UPS or FedEx?

I think (based on looking at their website pricing) that luggagefree offers some cheaper options than Fedex - not sure about UPS.

Ship your stuff as long as you don't mind paying the extra money. I "move" between Miami and Chicago about every three months and it is a major hassle. I usually end up shipping my clothes, it's not worth the hassle of taking my wardrobe to the airport. Plus, most of the time I get both my bags are each over the 50 lbs. limit. Luckily, I've had nice skycaps and found that tipping them $15 can save you $100.

When I was moving out of my dorm, I bought two large boxes, packed them with as much as I could get in there....UPS came and picked them up, and I shipped them via UPS ground. It was about $30 for each package, plus $20 for the pickup but it was 100% worth it. My only regret was not shipping another box.

The packages got to my home the next day, the delivery man brought them in because they were so heavy and it saved my family from having to rent a van to come move me out.

Most airlines have a 3 bag limit, free of charge. that may be 2 checked, 1 carry on, 3 checked, no carry on, etc.

as far as becoming a selectee. Its usually if you book a one way ticket, withing 24 hours of departure and pay cash. But keep in mind the computer can pick ANYONE as a selectee, even if you dont fit the criteria above

When I headed off to college back in '87, I shipped most of the items I wanted to take via UPS. Of course, back then, it was a heck of a lot cheaper to ship 5 or six boxes via UPS (something like $60) than it was to fly from IAH to BOS. It just required some planning in advance.

Song's domestic baggage policy (Concourse D at FLL = Delta or Song, and probably Song for FLL-BDL) allows three checked bags of up to 50 lbs each at no charge. This is similar to Southwest's policy.

Just after 9/11, a one-way ticket was an automatic "special screening" at the gate. In the past three years, though, my periodic BOS-PBI or PBI-BOS one-way tickets have not merited special screening, but that could have been because I do those trips with some regularity.
