Joe Leonard Question

Thu Jul 07, 2005 12:17 am

This is going to sound a lot worse then I mean it to. Also, I did a search on this and didn't come up with anything.

On the train the other day while connecting in ATL I overheard a bunch of Air Tran employees joking about "Forklift Joe". I asked a friend who works for Air Tran as a pilot what the reference to "Forklift Joe" was all about, andhe told me it had something to do with a rumor that Joe Leonard was in charge of maintenance at AA and developed the engine change policy involving a forklift that led to the catastrophic engine failure on the AA191 crash. Anyone know how true this rumor is?

According to this, it was Bill Fey, but I don't know where either he or Mr. Leonard were in the chain back then. Perhaps there's a mention in the NTSB report...

I went back and looked at the NTSB report, and didn't see his name specifically mentioned, nor was anyone else's except for the crew.

I do know that a forklift was involved, but wether Joe was involved or not is an unknown to me. I would not think so since he was an ops guy at EA.

I think he worked at NW under Don Nyrop, as well.

Did he go from NW - EA - NW- FL?

Is that why Joe Leonard left AA?

From the rumor, yes, that's why he left. Don't know how to confirm it though.
