BA And The A380 For The 2012 Olympics

Thu Jul 07, 2005 3:19 pm

Now that London is going to host the 2012 Olympics, will BA go for a fleet of A380 ? Sure the A380 will look great with BA.

Can't really see BA making a long-term commitment for new a/c for a short-term event. In any case, I can't see an A380 investment, probably more likely to be 747/747NG equipment.

Oh I don't know... I think the following order is possible before the construction of T5 is finished:

20x787s
Ready for delivery to replace 767s. Maybe a few based at MAN to operate the New York and a few new routes?

10x773ERs
To replace the older 744s mainly and increase capacity on some 772 routes.

4x772LRs
To finally start LHR-SYD direct for the premium market and maybe one more long range route.

10x388
To put on HKG/LAX (where BA could go back to 2 a day, rather than 3, saving a few slots for new routes), and JNB/CPT, maybe NRT, SIN/SYD.

I can dream, can't I?!

Well, since the A380 and 787 are both supposed to debut for 2008 Olympics in China, not sure how four years later it will be such a big deal to show off.

If you are talking capacity, so many carriers are going to add capacity for that time, for BA to buy those planes just for those 2 weeks would be a bad decision.

If they make sense for 10 years, then they would do it.
