Any 747 Commercial Flights Within The US?

Thu Jul 07, 2005 11:51 pm

Does anyone know of any regularly scheduled flights traveling within the continental US only, on Boeing 747s? Thanks!

Does United still fly 747s nonstop from HNL to mainland USA?

No--maybe some aircraft substitutions. As it stands now I know United has a dily 744 DEN-SFO-DEN routing. The occasional SFO-LAX repositioning flights--beyond that not sure.

United still flies 744s on a select number of domestic runs between ORD-DEN, DEN-SFO, and ORD-LAX. They are repositioning flights, so the scheudles and routes change often. They even operate LAX-SFO with 744s once in a while. Those are the only bookable flights.

Unbookable, Eva flies Newark-Seattle, El Al flies Miami-Newark, PAL flies Los Angeles-Manila, Asiana flies New York City/JFK-Anchorage, and Qantas flies New York City/JFK-Los Angeles.

I think you mean Los Angeles-Honolulu. Don't forget El Al flies Newark-Chicago (O'Hare) once a week, also unbookable.

Not to mention the unbookable China Airlines SEA-IAH. Every so often they sub the 744 for the 343. Do you know what dates the UA 744 is on those routes--the only one currently scheduled is the DEN-SFO-DEN run--but they show up on those other routes mentioned frequently.

I flew UA 595 DEN-SFO on a 744 last night. Sat on the upper deck. Very nice ride. Too bad the flight was so short!

I knew that UA puts a 744 on the SFO-DEN run but I've yet to see a 744 routed on DEN-ORD or DEN-IAD. The largest aircraft on those routes is usually a 772, which is very common.

Was gonna point that out, but since you are flying on it, good on you for beating me to it!

As for other non-bookable flights, QF of course flies a 744 LAX-JFK a few days a week.

Maybe an odd question, but wouldn't an unbookable flight just be a reposition? Or are there actually pax onboard?

No

And you can book that. You just can't book the LAX-HNL segment. Actually, that segment does not run all the time, as if the winds are favorable, PAL just overflies HNL and refiles to MNL

They are repositioning flights that they put PAX from another flight on to. Given the number of people who fly LAX-SFO, it is understandable when UA sometimes needs to use the 744

Those unbookable flights are for the international pax continuing on, so in the case of LAX-JFK on QF, the segment LAX-JFK is only for the pax who origininated on the flight in Australia. Same goes for the reverse. Only pax that can get on at JFK are those whose destination is Australia.

I think to my knowledge United flies some 744s occasionally on re-positioning flights, and even sometimes operating a SFO-IAD.

From this weeks Schedule......
United Domestic 747-400 Flights.....
LAX-IAD Daily Flight 946
IAD- LAX Daily Flight 947
SFO-DEN Daily Flight 770
DEN-SFO Daily Flight 595

Other times of the year you will see them scheduled on ORD-LAX, ORD-SFO, ORD-IAD and as has been mentioned repositioning/substitutions throughout the system. LAX-SFO-LAX happens once in a while if SFO is fogged in 2-3 737 flights are canceled and they will operate a 747, if one is available, to clear the passenger backlog.

I heard last month that UA is opening a 744 pilot base at IAD with approximately 32 pilots to be based there. They are flying 744's to LAX, FRA and LHR that I know of out of IAD. I heard there may be some expansion of 744 flying there.

I believe you can also book this between LAX-JFK as long as you are going to continue on back to Australia.

For instance. On the same ticket, you can do SYD-LAX, LAX-JFK, JFK-LAX-SYD, but spend time in both LA and NY, no?

No...Columbia Airlines went out of business after a protracted flight attendants and pilots strike. THe f/a's were insisting on a pay rise since the scope of their roles were increased to include flying the aircraft.

The pilots struck because they viewed the f/a's flying the aircraft as a back-door way of introducing A-scale pilots and B-scale pilots.

Well I suppose, I haven't flown them on that route since 1975 so its possible they no longer fly it.

You can only be on the LAX-JFK or JFK-LAX if you have come off or going to a QF numbered flight operating to/from Australia / New Zealand as a connecting flight (ie as a transit stop only in LAX, and your flights must connect within 24 hours or arriving or departing).

A loop hole with this also is that you can also arrive in Auckland at 10.45 am on QF25 one morning and depart the next day on QF107 to JFK as it is still under 24 hours.

And that Columbia Airlines flight 409 IAD-LAX is one VERY long flight...you take off about 11 PM and arrive over Utah about 7 in the morning. That's about a ten-hour flight.

On the other hand, Joe Patroni is still in charge of maintenance, and he's quite good.

Seriously, United is the only airline still flying 747's domestically, and the routes have been quite well discussed. Get on one before they're gone completely!!

Happy flying!!  airplane

Why are all these flights non-bookable? Whatever happened to 5th Freedoms??? Or are the A345 and 772LR going to end the era of making stops on intercontinental flights?
