Santa Barbara Lease A Second B757

Sat Jul 09, 2005 8:24 pm

Santa Barbara Airlines of Venezuela has wet-lease a second Boeing 757-200 for flights to the USA.

This B757 is leased from Primaris Airlines (N740PA) - so Primaris has no plane for ther own flights.

The aircraft is in full Primaris colors but with Santa Barbara logo and titels.

Thanks for information Viasa. I assume Santa Barbara Airlines is doing well on their flights to the U.S.? I have to say I don't like the combination of the Primaris livery and the tail logo from Santa Barbara Airlines. But anyway, it's good news for them I guess.

That Primaris livery is pretty awful, thats why. I think the Santa Barbara stickers make it look a bit better.

So are they now using both 757s on the Miami flight?

I don't know how they are doing (financially), but they have a lot of local marketing in Miami, and they are sponsoring events. I hope they are doing good, seems to be a nice airline.

How is the service by the way?

Great news for Santa Barbara! Big grin.

Viasa, thanks for sharing the info and the pic. Do you know where it was taken?. I was expecting another 757 with PW engines rather than Rolls Royce engines for maintenance purposes.

I assume the same since they have a second frequency scheduled as of August 1st, according to their website.

Question: what concourse does Santa Barbara use in MIA?

Quoting A388 (Reply 1):

Very good from what I've heard. On Tuesday they launched a 50% off offer on flights to MIA. THe offer ends today. AA only reacted by dropping the base fare from USD 450 to USD 350, but still higher than Santa Barbara's USD 200 base fare. There's no restriction on travel dates. I couldn't miss the oportunity and bought myself a return ticket to travel to MIA on September.

Quoting MIAMIx707 (Reply 2):

This comes as a surprise because they aren't increasing frecuencies significately. They are currently flying 12X weekly. 2X daily except for the saturday night MIA-CCS flight and the morning CCS-MIA flight on Sunday. I guess this must be for maintenance reasons. But now with two 757s they should at least increase frecuencies to 24X weekly. If they don't double their frecuencies, then I don't understand the purpose of this second 757.

I will fly them to MIA on September, expect a trip report with many pics. Meanwhile I can only tell you about friends's experiences. One friend flew them to MIA on their first month of ops to MIA last year, he said both flights departed on time, on board service was great. His only bad remark was the legroom. Then I have another friend who flew Santa Barbara to TFN on their DC10s, she also spoke very good about it.

If there are doing well on the route, why a 50% off promotion on already low fares?

Forgot to mention... what low fares? USD 560 return on AA is cheap for a 2hr 50min flight? I don't think so. Santa Barbara was offering fares of USD 530 and Aeropostal USD 480. The cheapest you could get to South Florida was with AV CCS-BOG-FLL at USD 360 return.

Luis, don't you think they could use this aircraft for an additional destination in the US or as a replacement for the 727 to UIO-GYE ?
Unfortunately I't a bit difficult for me to find this out as I am still on this hot island.
If there is no news until Tuesday I will make some phonecalls...

Wetleasing a relatively new 757 from a US operator to fly CCS-UIO-GYE doesn't make sense to me. A new destination in the US? I'll put my money on a Maracaibo-Miami/FLL-Maracaibo service. The US Dept of Transportation granted them the authority to fly that route. Lets keep our fingers crossed. Maybe Mark has some info for us, if not then we'll wait until Tuesday for your info.

Cheers,

Yes, now I remember...but this was already some time ago. Is it still valid ?
I mean, now that it is clear that Spirit will not apply for CCS-FLL it's no bad idea. But the 757 is quite large for that route.

I hope it's not only a temporary replacement because of maintanance on N720TW.

As Chiguire said in another thread. Santa Barbara is doing poorly in their European flights, so plans to renew their long-haul fleet have been discarded  Sad it's a shame.

Santa Barbara is planning on launching FLL-CCS and MIA-MAR, though nothing has been set in stone. They already have US DOT approval.

Don't laugh when I ask this question but I have to ask it.

(I'm surprised somebody else hasn't asked this question.)

In light of the name of the airline why don't they fly at least the 727 to (SBA) Santa Barbara, California

The longest runway is long enough for either the 72 or 75 -- 6049 ft.

I know what you're going to say--that not long enough even though I've seen B757s take off at DTW with 4000 ft easily. Chicago Midway's longest runway is 6522 ft.

OK I'm listening. No pies in the face please.

Im not sure if Primaris really sign an order or just plan to purchase the B737 and B787...

Thats what I found on the Boeing homepage.: http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/2004/q4/nr_041021g.html

If there is an order, they would purchase the first Boeing 737-800 in 2005.

Well, all I could find out today is that nobody from S3 seems to know anything about new routes on an increase of frequencies on MIA-CCS.
They believe it's a temporary sublease for maintanance.
Very sad, but on the other hand logical.
Why should they have two operators to the US ? One plane (flight) "operated by Transmeridian", the other "operated by Primaris". In case of an increase of flights they would probably have taken a second Transmeridian.

Damn  Sad I was expecting MAR-MIA to be launched 10X weekly and CCS increased to 14X weekly.

Exactly it makes sense to have only one operator for both planes but who knows, maybe Primaris's 757 is a very good deal better than what they pay for Transmeridian's.

In the future, don't be surprised to see them launch those routes in the future. When they applied with US DOT, they asked for permission to fly four route: MIA-MAR, MIA-CCS, FLL-MAR, and FLL-CCS.

Though a 757 is a little too big for MIA-MAR. Maybe they should look at leasing a 737.

Since it's a wet lease, they don't have to worry about maintenance, as that will be the responsibility of Primaris (who will have maintenance staff or a contractor at the airports the a/c will fly into).

Indeed, you're right. I had a confusion between a wet lease and a dry lease. My mistake  boggled .

It's not official but I think the lease with Transmeridian might be ended. N720TW was seen in Sanford (Orlando,Fl) today flying a Transmeridian flight, so I do not think it's a maintenance issue. If they are not increasing frequencies, a 2nd 757 does not make sense.

This makes sense. My assumption is that they signed a one-year wetlease contract with Transmeridian which just expired last week, they didn't renew it because Primaris offered a better deal.

So it looks like I'll be flying N740PA on September then.
