Market For SLC-PVD?

Tue Jul 12, 2005 1:42 am

First of all do you think there is a west cost market for a

LAX-PVD?
SFO--PVD?
SEA-PVD?
YVR-PVD?
ANC-PVD?

But with DL why no SLC-PVD i think if they were to put that connection at SLC it would steal west coast connections to PVD. . JUST AN IDEA. Here is what I have looked at the farthest west coast flight to PVD is WN PHX-PVD, then DFW with AA, ORD, MSP ect ect.

If the new E-jets can do it, its possible, but there could be a huge market prime for DL, but they wont do anything due to their interests at BOS. The west coast market would be better suited for an airline like Frontier. Also keep in mind that LAS and PHX will likely come soon as a result of the US and HP merger and LAX and SAN are possible for the future ( PVD already does 300+ pax/ day to SAN). ANC and YVR i dont think I'll see in my lifetime ( and im fairly young!)... SEA and SFO have potential in the 10-15 year outlook.

Here's my breakdown on PVD long haul service

PHX Currently 2x WN
LAS 0-1 year
IAH 1-2 year
DEN 0-3 year
LAX 2-4 year
SJU 3-6 year
SAN 5-10
SFO 10-15
SEA 10-15
European Service (greater than 3-4x/ week) 10-15 years
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

Airports like PVD lose a lot of their appeal to airlines if they have a much larger price competitive market nearby like BOS. The old school of thought ( Southwest's based a good part of their strategy on this), is that people would drive out to the outlying airports for lower fares. Well with simplifares, and Song/Jetblue/Airtran/Frontier in BOS that leaves PVD pretty much relying on their own smaller local market. That means for the most part RJ service and a few narrowbodies to larger more distant hubs.

I think you'd have a better chance sending a 777 or an A340 SLC-PVG once or twice a week than you would linking up PVD to SLC at all.

Oops, except our daily schedule "for the most part" is mainline departures.

Daily departures incl regional and express affilates.

Southwest - 35
USAirways - 28
Cape Air - 16-22 (depending on DOW)
United - 10
Delta - 9
Continental - 9
Northwest - 7
American - 4
Independence - 4
Spirit - 3

That's 131 takeoffs scheduled for this Friday, July 15 2005. Of that total, 58, or 44%, are RJ or commuter (ranging from 70-seat CRJ 700s and Embraer 170s to 8-seat Cessna 402s. Of the airlines that offer a mainline and express mix service, 32, or 34% of the 93 departures offered are RJ/turboprop only. DH and 9K are the only RJ/commuter-only airlines at PVD, accouting for 26, or 19% of the total takeoffs.
