Ex-QX DHC-8s At Kckb?

Tue Jul 12, 2005 4:39 am

Good day everyone,

Yesterday I went flying with a friend of mine to Clarksburg, W. VA. It was a great flight, and when we landed, I noticed that there were quite a few (about four or five) Dash 8s parked outside a hangar on the ramp; all of them ex-Horizon birds (livery intact, minus titles and logo). Does CKB have a Dash 8 maintenance FBO? Or was it perhaps a storage area for the birds? We didn't stay long enough for me to ask around, so any info would be appreciated. Thanks for reading,

If I'm not mistaken I believe Bombardier operates a maintence facility in Clarksburg.

Exactly. Did you see any CRJ's, Lears, etc.?? Usually there's quite a few hanging out in CKB. And it never fails, at least every other PIT-MGW-CKB circuit I've ever been on, someone sitting near to me on the B1900 says something along the lines of "Damn! We could have flown (insert United, Delta, or NW here) on a jet instead!" And all I can do is laugh, then explain it.

Sidenote: Pre 9/11 Senators Rockafeller and Byrd had thrown enough money at Comair to get CRJ service scheduled for CKB to CVG. They were going to use it as a way to cycle a/c in for maintenance as well. Unfortunately the tragic events of 9/11 occurred, and like countless other flights... those were axed before ever leaving the ground. My honest opinion is that I can't think of how those birds would have gotten 20pax per flight, let alone 50, except maybe on a football weekend in Morgantown. (Home of West Virginia University)

IIRC the CVG-CKB flights did operate for a short period of time. I remember my father-in-law who works at WVAC (said Bombardier shop) mentioning they were operating scheduled ops. I also remember seeing normal Comair flight numbers on flytecomm for a while.

Seriously? This topic has come up in other threads a few times... like the one about WV EAS for CKB/MGW/PKB and whatnot and nobody ever recalled them actually flying the flights. Thanks for the great info!! Were there ever anyone on the flights though? They could probably do better if they were in MGW instead, as that's a more mobile type of society there (nothing against CKB, my g/f's family is originally from there!), but CRJ's on MGW's runway might get a little hairy at times. I wouldn't be surprised to see another state-influx of cash for either MGW/CKB if US continues to make Pittsburgh more and more worthless to the average EAS Pax out of those areas.

Not this time around - just a few Dash 8s parked outside the hangar. Keep in mind that it was Sunday though, and I believe the hangar doors were either closed or only ajar, blocking any views of what may have been inside. Thanks for clarifying the facility though!
