ABQ-JFK TWA Flight?

Thu Apr 27, 2000 8:37 am

I was reading posts from the past and i ran accross one that mentioned a possible ABQ-JFK route with TWA using the 717. I know that TWA is struggling, but what is the story behind that? Is TWA still considering an ABQ-JFK route?

Thanks,

Gabe

Well I don't think that the 717 has the range for that flight. If it would start(which isn't likely), it would be an MD-80.

Is TWA struggling that bad. I know today at the 'port i was inside today and the afternoon and morning flights to St. Louis were very empty. I think most passengers took the Southwest flight that was departing 10 minutes later in the morning, but in the afternoon it was strange.

Well TWA continues to lose money even though they have a fairly modern fleet. All the 727's will be gone soon, and the DC-9's will be replaced with the 717's and A318's. TWA is focusing more on the higher-yield routes now, that is why some routes out of JFK to Europe have been cancelled. The only expansion out of JFK i see is more flights to the Caribbean. They do well there.

I would sure love to see an A318 in TWA livery, that plane would look awsome. Have you heard that Frontier is getting some 319's some time soon, now that would be a sight.

Continental will soon own the ABQ-NYC route. They have just Saturday only service and are in a wait and see attitude as to whether to make the service daily. I would love to see it become a daily 737-700, it would be an important service for us here at ABQ.

I am not at all surprised to hear or that TWA may start ABQ-JFK service. They have had it tiwice in times past. The most recent one in the early 80s. since then the tourist industry has really taken off in ABQ and business travel has greatly increased there too. In early March CO started weekend service nonstop from Newark to ABQ. So it may be a case of TWA trying to hold its own. In addition there has been a lot of tourism from Europe in the southwest recently. Since both TWA and CO have an international presence in NYC it would seem logical. Also along these lines i heard just today that UAL might start jet service nonstop from IAD to ABQ. Dont know the details on that. Another rumor that has been off and on is SW starting nonstop service BWI-ABQ. Even reservation agents have told me that one rumor has been around for awhile. There have been a lot of people from the northeast that have moved to ABQ so all there could turn out to be true in the not too distant future.

Good morning! Well that's cool that airlines are starting to recognize us here in ABQ. If United were to start an IAD-ABQ route would they use a 757 or possibly an A320? I know that United wouldn't use a 777, but hey, it's worth a shot. How about JetBlue starting a JFK-ABQ route to compete with Continental's ABQ-EWR route? So many possbilities and chances to possibly see some new regular aircraft here in the future. By the way, what route does that Delta 757 run? I have seen it here twice and im curious as to where it goes? CVG? ATL? Also, yesterday i did see a Delta 737-800 and boy was that a sight, too bad i didn't have my camera. And the -800 was subing for the 727 on the afternoon ABQ-CVG route most likely.

After i did my posting last night another thought came to mind. Perhaps Delta might think about ABQ-JFK as they are slowly building a hub up at JFK and in fact have a number of flights nonstop to JFK from points in the west and southwest. Another option would be AA starting nonstop ABQ-JFK but that could be much farther down the road as they are building a new terminal at JFK. ABQ has sure come a long way from when i was a student at UNM from 68-72. All we had to come east was TWA. Amazing.
