LTU Airbus And Olympic Aircraft Collide In JFK

Tue Jul 12, 2005 2:26 pm

Following mediareports in Germany an Airbus from LTU collided with an Olympic aircraft in JFK yesterday during push-back.
It seems the Olympic aircraft did not stop as requested to let the LTU jet push back from gate and hit with his winglets the rear-section of the LTU aircraft. Both planes were unfit for flying.
This is the second incident involving an Olympic aircraft in some days.
Three days ago a L 1010 charteded by Olympic was refused take-off in France for security related issues .

Perfect timing for OA, coinciding with the absolute peak of travel to Greece.

LTU Airbus And Olympic Aircraft Collide In JFK

Ouch, that is going to hurt. LTU, being a typical leisure airline, is already pretty short on longhaul aircraft this summer, and losing one of their Airbusses for a whole day certainly had some impact on their ops. I wonder, whether they have chartered a backup at short notice to get those passenegrs (plus the one from the following day) back to DUS.

BTW the LT A330-200 only had a seat load factor of 65% - even considering that more passengers are currently flying outbound DUS than inbound due to the start of the summer school holidays just recently, this is certainly below the target value LTU has intended - irregardless of the yield and the cargo colume, which we don't know.

Quoting Beaucaire (Thread starter):
Following mediareports in Germany an Airbus from LTU collided with an Olympic aircraft in JFK yesterday during push-back.

According to the FAA, the LTU A330 experienced brake problems while taxiing to take-off.
The Olympic Aw. A340 which was following, was allowed to overtake it.
In the manoeuvre, the A340 stuck the rear stabilizer of the A330.
Damages reported unknown.

Olympic ran into LTU while taxing getting ready for takeoff. No push back crews were involved since LTU is out of the IAT and Olympic is from T1.

Does anyone know what happened with the L-1011 three days ago? What airline, aircraft registration e.t.c. was it?

Does this really surprise anybody out of Olympic?

I mean that has got to be the worst run carrier in europe.
Just another saga in a long history of them.

Really they are disgrace to greece.
When are they ever going to get their act togther?

What do you mean Lufthansa ?

They might be pretty poor as a company (they are), but as far as flight deck, flight operations and maintenance are concerned they have outstanding records.
Give OA credit where it is due.

While Olympic is certainly not up to BA level of service, I find it to be a good experience flying them and I've found their crews have met or exceeded my expectations, sometimes the food sucks but that goes for all airlines I've flown.

Mabe I'm coming at it from the perspective of a guy used to flying on lousy North American carriers but I've found Olympic's product perfectly acceptible and the prices are better than all but the charter cattle cars if you want to get to Greece. I truly hope they get over their troubles and emerge a stronger airline.

Well as you just admitted, they're poorly run.

So poorly run.... that everybody is waiting for something
stupid to happen. Yes...it is never a serious accident.... but always
something stupid which either costs people a lot of money or time.

They probably shouldn't even be in business...but then again...there
are Airlines in the USA and Canada that probably should have folded also,
had they not had courts protecting them.

Notice how much rudder they're using to compensate for the down engine!

What nation's flag is that on the tail? UAE?

I agree with Iakobos 100%. OA's safety record is the thing people forget about OA.
OA's economy / coach class is one of the roomiest around.  bigthumbsup

It is one thing to blame Olympic for its more than inconsistent service, it is another to start suggesting that they are not safe. Their safety record is outstanding. There are few airlines I would trust as much as Olympic when it comes to maintenance level as well as the superior quality of their flight crews ( I did not say cabin crews...)

I don't want to continue the OA bashing, but I flew them for the first time last weekend, CAI-ATH-CAI, and I was pretty underwhelmed. One flight was 30 minutes late, the other 90 minutes late - to wait for connecting pax who were also late. These connecting pax delayed four flights out of ATH. Also, the check-in lines in ATH were chaotic, you had to push your way to the front, seemed disorganized.

The actual on-flight service was fine, though, and the food was decent. However - no OA magazines in coach? Even Yemenia has magazines in coach!

Unfortunately I don't.
The FAA is referring to the flight numbers, LTU1551 for the A330 and OA412 for the A340.
If anybody has access to JFK flight movements on July 9th, 2004, that may help.

I'm currently in Athens, having flown down with OA from Heathrow on Monday.

Rather than a nice A340, we were hurded onto a seriously clapped out Air Finland 752, complete with 219 seats, 28'' leg room, no hot food, no bar and no service, oh and free seating onboard.

It was a complete disaster. I'm not looking forward to my return flight tomorrow evening (scheduled to be an A300, but who knows).

I understand that two OA long haul aircraft are now out of service.. is this correct?

THe Olympic returned to the gate and had the right winglet removed. Around midnight or so it proceeded to ATH. The LTU left JFK yesterday after being checked out and repairs were made.

Just booked my first flight with Olympic to Athens in September. Should be an A340 out from LHR. Looking forward to flying with them and visiting Greece immensely! Although I've never had the pleasure of flying on a Tristar I won't be too chuffed if there's one waiting for me at the gate!! I'll stick to the A340.

France grounds Olympic-chartered L-1011

"French air accident investigation bureau BEA has opened an investigation into the incident. The French transport ministry says that the investigation has established that the aircraft is “outdated and badly-kept”.

“Initial results of the investigation indicate that the aircraft, outdated and badly-kept, was chartered by Olympic Airlines from UAE-registered company StarJet,” says the ministry.

LTU was down for 4 days in JFK while they changed the left elevator. Olympic had its left winglet removed and went back on service 3 hours later. What is really aggrevating is that OA's captain was not sent for a drug or alcohol test and i hear the FAA is really unhappy with OA right now

Can you guys tell us which LTU A330 and which OA A340 were involved?
Either by reg or c/n.
Thanks in advance.

It seems that OA is taking the route of Onur Air, leasing lousy Tristars. This A6-BSM was with Star Air Jordan as 9L-LED until very recently. One of its sister ships was the L1011 Onur leased in that resulted in their problems.
I hope OA knows what they are doing.
