How Long Has CO Been Using DL Gates At T6, LAX?

Tue Jul 12, 2005 6:17 pm

I just saw a picture and noticed that a CO plane was parked at a gate normally used by DL at T6 in LAX.

I've seen this as well, in 2004. I'm not sure how long this has been going on, though.

Could you actually post a picture? What kind of plane? Day or night?

If you glance over at T6 in the pic you'll notice the CO tail parked facing East instead of West. Those spots used to be DL territory and the last time I was at T6 I only saw CO at the usual gates (60-69?) on the East side of T6. My guess is
that this is a result of CO joining Skyteam.

A result of the lease(s) governing T-6. Though CO/DL/UA have preferrential use of specific T-6 gates, all T-6 gates are under LAWA control. The leases have stipulations regarding gate usage as a result of OSO, fleet mix, or schedule adjustments.

For instance, UA has preferrential use of 69A. However, UA must also make the gate available to CO due to that gate being one of two able to accomodate CO's 767-400 (LAX-HNL-LAX). On rare occassion you'll see a DL aircraft occupy 69A or 69B. And prior to UA schedule pare down, they'd sometimes use gate 64.

Considering the date of the photo mentioned by B-787, CO was most likely affected by OSO that day. However, with COs increased summer sked at LAX, CO usage of those gates is probably more common now.

Yeah, it might be a tech problem, delays from fog keeping more planes on the ground, etc. It's not common. Commonly, 60, 62A, 62, 64 and 69A are the gates CO uses. But they can also use 68A,B and 69B. And Copa uses 62 and 64 as well.

I've only ever been in 69A on the CO 764s I've taken to from IAH. IIRC, I also was once at 69A for a 753 when the other gates were full due to a delay.

For the longest time, CO would only roll widebody equipment into 69A, whether it be 747s, DC-10s, 767s, or 777s. Now, they put some 757-300 flights in there as well.

Way back when, the entire terminal was Continental, but gate swap arrangements brought United and Delta into the fold as CO shifted focus to DEN, IAH, and later EWR. So, as it stands now (going strictly on memory, but I do make it out to LA pretty often):

CO:
60: up to 757 size
62: up to 767 size (marked out for 2x ERJ)
64: 737 size (marked out for 2x ERJ)
68: up to 747 size
69: up to 747 size

Delta is out of 61/63/65/67
United is out of 66/67/68/69

CO usually uses 69A, at which there is a CO podium and GSE, but we have used 68B in a pinch, which is normally staffed by United. All gates listed above have CO staff and GSE. The situation above probably occurred during irregular ops where all CO-staffed gates were occupied and United positions in the rotunda are all tied up. An ad-hoc arrangement was probably made with DL to ground-service CO's arriving aircraft at their empty space in T6 (as it is most of the day). There is no CO staff or GSE on the ramp at gates 61/63 (65 is an RJ gate, IIRC, the CO 737 in the picture appears to be at one of those two), nor does CO computer hardware in place on the terminal level at those gates to handle CO flights.

It looks like it is at 61 to me. DL uses 63 a lot, as they put 767s going to Atlanta there more than a few times when I am in the President's club, but 61 doesn't seem to get much use. I don't make it over to 65 and 67 much unless I am going out of 69A, but I have seen all sorts of DL planes at 67.

Which gates do the CO Mexico RJ flights come in to? Are they bused to customs?

CO has actually been in T6 for a long time. I don't remember where
they were before going to T6, but IIRC Eastern had gates there
and CO started using those. The ones on the end of 6....CO used
to park their 747 (Flight 1 LAX-HNL-GUM) there.

T-6 was built for Continental and Delta. Delta moved to T-5 when they bought Western. They still kept 61-67 in 6. Skywest used 65 and 67 until United took those over. Eastern moved from T-3 to T-6 after Texas Air Corp bought them..

When LAX was built, Robert Six was the man in charge of Continental.

Legend has it that Mr. Six specifically requested the use of Terminal 6 (SIX).

LAX was then the headquarters for Continental...their old headquarters building was on the property....and was still there the last time I was there...far east side of the property, south side of the street.

Continental IS Terminal 6, just as Terminal SIX is Continental.

You may be thinking of Western's old HQ. CO's former HQ complex is situated along World Way West at the far west end of LAX.

DL originally used gates 65, 67A, 67B, and 69. DL obtained 61 and 63 from the Eastern Airlines estate. CO originally used 60, 62, 64, 66, 68A, and 68B

Also occupied by (Hughes) Airwest and PSA. PS was there until the opening of T-1.

Skywest operated out of Terminal 5 as Western Express and later Delta
Connection. I can remember when we operated out of 5 in a temporary
hallway/gate area on the Southeast corner of the building and then later
in the center part of 5 by the escalators. I can't remember exactly
when we went to 6...I want to say 1988 or 1989.

We did stay in 6 for quite awhile after hooking up with United. Even
after all the flights went to the remote, the SAN flights still operated
from the upstairs area of 6 (67 A and B). Everything finally went to
the remote in 2000 or 2001 I think. If you walk around the gates
in 6 now, all of our old podiums at 65 and 67 are still there......
