Condor Pilot Flies Close To Another Airplane

Tue Jul 12, 2005 7:53 pm

http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/0,1518,364847,00.html (in German, sorry)

According to Spiegel.de, a Condor pilot maneuvered his B767 airplane with passengers onboard close to another airplane so he could make a photo of that airplane, as the pilot on board of the other airplane was making his last flight. However, he came very close to another airplane, so that the pilot of that airplane had to climb in order to avoid a collision. The Condor pilot has been suspended from work.

I am always very careful when Der Spiegel writes things like that, because Der Spiegel, although being one of the best magazines in the world, sometimes tends to report things in a obscure or exaggerated way. But if this story is true, it is rather alarming.

It is true, he got the wrong plane and came close to a Thomas Cook (UK) A330, his intended buddy was actually over 100nm ahead I believe.

Both Condor pilots suspended, quite rightly playing games like that.  Yeah sure

It's been on PPRuNe for at least a week, surprised no-one picked up on it earlier.

Your wrong Rick767, according to today's Daily Mail it's a Thomas Cook 757 Airbus! And that the aircraft had to be at least 60 miles apart. Big grin

Yep, I just read that article, very funny considering the actual picture of the 75 said 'Boeing 757' on it. At least they got the pictures right, amazing!

This is a very stupid thing for a pilot to do. Quite right that he is suspended, how stupid,

So does he get priority screening? I do hope that we get to see that picture in the database soon!

Now that he's fired, he could make up for the loss through photosale on a.net... NOT!

BBC doesnt say what kind of aircraft they were. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4675413.stm
I guess now that pilot won't be taking anymore pictures from the cockpit for some time.

Reminds me of a few years ago when an AR pilot (possibly AU) went out of the approach line to fly over the River Plate stadium, that at the time was packed since Argentina was playing Colombia for a WC qualifyer. Obviously the pilot was fired. Crazy world ....

Both planes were bound for Canada on Friday, June 24. I figure the Condor flight (767) was DE 2062 operating FRA-YHZ. As for the Thomas Cook flight (757), it could have been LGW-YYZ, GLA-YYZ or MAN-YYZ (on Fridays).
Next flights: YQM-YYZ-YOW v.v. / YQM-CUN v.v. / YQM-YUL-YWG v.v. / YSJ-YYZ-SEA-SFO / SFO-YYZ-YOW-YQM / YQM-YYZ-MUC-TXL /

Matt:

According to Spiegel.de:

The discussed plane was a Condor 767 with 234 pax going from FRA to YHZ, the other one was an English Thomas Cook 757 going from LGW to YYZ. Apparently, the pilot confused that plane for a different one. He thought it was a company plane, but actually it was that Thomas Cook 757 that got surprized by the approaching 767. Let's all blame it on Thomas Cook's paint schemes.

That reminds me of an incident a few years back when a pilot 'buzzed' his house in Congleton, Cheshire in a 757 because it was his wifes' birthday. I'm fairly certain he was fired.

Hola Bongo,
In fact, it wasn't during that specific game because I remember the incident being during the day and the game was played at night. I tried to look uo for the correct game but have not had too much luck so far...

Would ATC not have noticed the two aircraft in such close proximity?

There's no radar coverage over the Atlantic. Planes fly with procedural seperation. Something like at least sixty miles apart.

It said A330 in the article but had a picture of 757 is this the dumbest thing an airline pilot has done other than the intoxicated BA flight crew ?

It happenes in Canada were? YES
There were 2 Condor planes in Canada at the same time? PROBABLY
A Condor pilot had it's last flight not to Germany? NO

If it would be the last flight he surely would have flown to Germany. How to return the plane to Germany without a pilot on duty. Don't think they'll keep an extra pilot in the jumpseat just to fly the plane back.

Stupid Decision by the Pilot. His Job at the Time was to Fly the Aircraft.
Next time maybe they can hire a spotter plane for the shoot.

Hi all,

Maybe if all the tour operators left each carrier in each contry to keep their identity, e.g Condor, as opposed to Thomas Cook, Hapag Lloyd and Britannia as opposed to TUI this would not have happened as he wouldnt have got confused!!  box

Cheers
