Gravelly Point Article In Today's WP

Tue Jul 12, 2005 9:29 pm

There is a somewhat interesting article about Gravelly Point in today's Washington Post- it is right on the top of their website-
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...le/2005/07/11/AR2005071101513.html

Just thought I'd share.

"Some planes have upturned wing tips that pilots have nicknamed epaulets, Cordwell told her. The epaulets keep air pressure on the plane and reduce fuel consumption."

I've never heard of winglets referred to as epaulets.

From websters.com:

ep·au·let also ep·au·lette n.

A shoulder ornament, especially a fringed strap worn on military uniforms.

Huh, you learn something new everyday.

Thanks for the article, CV990A.

"What is that?" Cordwell asked as something screamed past.

Jennings smiled and squinted. "This would be, um, an F-100?"

Who still flies F-100's into DCA?

There hasn't been any F-100's in DCA since the later part of 2003 when AA removed them from their fleet.

I was wondering how many posts it would take before people started disecting it.  Smile

That's like asking "how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop"?

Any errors or oversights don't mean much to me. Gravelly Point is still open to the public and a nice place to go for plane nuts and non-plane nuts alike.

We can always dissect any plane article. We are freaks. How about the sentence in the 2nd paragraph:
Clearly as you read the continuation, he meant to say the white plane was still on it's takeoff roll while the US Airways jet was on approach and forced to do a go around.

"A dark blue US Airways jet was hurtling toward the runway of Reagan National Airport, where a white plane was still taxiing before takeoff."

Great article. I lived in DC for two years and often would go down there to relax at the end of the day. Beautiful spot. I can't imagine there's a better spotting location in America.

Also, great to read an article glorifying plane spotting for a change, rather than condemning it and shutting down good spotting locations.

i've been going there my whole life and also got engaged there. a great view of the city to go along with the proximity to the end of the runway. it's a must-see for any area resident or visitor.
