Why Is IST So Popular?

Wed Jul 13, 2005 8:11 am

Why is IST so popular for it being in Turky and having so many destinations from multiple airlines what drives airlines to choose this as a destination . .
Is it just a rapidly growing city? Population? Is it because its It is officially in both Europe and Asia, but is generally considered European? What side is the airport on?

With AA flying JFK-IST will they ever do ORD, LAX, DFW?
Does Turkish Airlines have any plans ordering new aircraft? Or Currently have aircraft on order?
Can anyone provide me with a list of airlines TOTAL that serve IST?
Will Turkish airlines ever fly direct to LAX? Or YVR? I really could see a maket in YVR.

Just out of curiosity anyone else feel IST needs to update their webpage or make it more user friendly?

Thank You

Wow you sure managed to ask lots of questions in one post.

Quoting Squirrel83 (Thread starter):
Why is IST so popular for it being in Turky and having so many destinations from multiple airlines what drives airlines to choose this as a destination .

Turkey is one of the worlds top tourist destinations particularly for Europeans. With a population of 70 million people (over 10 million in the Istanbul metropolitan area) the countries economy continues to grow which has created strong consumer demand including for air travel.

Quoting Squirrel83 (Thread starter):
What side is the airport on?

Istanbul is served by two commercial airports. IST - Istanbul Ataturk Airport is located on the European side, while SAW - Sabiha Gokcen International is on the Asian side. As IST is close to capacity more and more charter traffic along with LCC carriers as German Wings are opting to serve SAW.

Quoting Squirrel83 (Thread starter):
With AA flying JFK-IST will they ever do ORD, LAX, DFW?

AA does not serve Istanbul with its own metal. AA code shares with THY Turkish Airlines. Delta is currently the only US carrier offering scheduled service to Istanbul via a nonstop from JFK. In the past both Pan Am and TWA served Istanbul.

Quoting Squirrel83 (Thread starter):
Does Turkish Airlines have any plans ordering new aircraft? Or Currently have aircraft on order?

With almost an infinate demand THY is growing quite quickly. They have over 40 Airbus A320 series and Boeing 738-800s on order. Also they will receive their first A330s this fall.

Quoting Squirrel83 (Thread starter):
Will Turkish airlines ever fly direct to LAX? Or YVR? I really could see a maket in YVR.

THY currently serves JFK and ORD. IAD most likely in 2006 and LAX the year after. A Canada destination is definately in the works with a strong preference for Toronto, however the current Canada-Turkey bilateral does not permit this without consent of Canadian authorities which they have yet been willing to grant.

Many Americans have a limited knowledge about Turkey, a large country, with a big population, a rapidly developing economy, plans to join the European Union, and the country where Europe meets Asia.

Aside from the fact that IST is a major business center - Turkish Riviera has become a huge tourist destination for Europeans (I mean huge, you would be shocked at the number of charter and holiday flights that there are per day to Turkey from European airports, including flights from smaller regional airports) and many people from Turkey have immigrated to European countries (there is a huge Turkish population in Germany, for example) which drives the friends and family and visitor traffic.

Sad but true indeed. Unfortunately many in the US have stereotypical views of Turkey as portrayed as in movies and such.
Turkey has been a close US friend and strategic ally in the region ever since its entry into NATO way back in 1952.

Turkey is quite popular with people down in this part of the world. After all it was the ANZAC's who were sent thousands of kilometres from home to fight in Gallipoli. Wasn't too pleased the state of Lone Pine after the rememberance ceremonies and pilgrims sleeping among the war graves.

Also a lot of backpackers from New Zealand love to go and experience the sights and sounds of Europe. Turkey is a great place to go backpacking. Can't wait until I finish university and do the big OE.

A lot of older travellers love to travel through Turkey and Egypt on arranged tours and IST is usually the starting point for travel.

The way we get up to Turkey is usually through SQ and a combination of TG and TK. Or to get feeder flights from LHR or FRA to IST.

Cheers

When I mention to friends my intent to visit Turkey next summer, the response is usually, "Are you crazy?" Typical exclamations unfit for rehashing here.....
I wanted horribly to visit the ruins of Zeugma before the flood, but alas, was too late. Thankfully a lot of the mosaics were saved.
Still, many amazing things to see and do.

Can't wait to stay in the tree-house hostel, rent a sailboat for 20E a day, and hike up to see the eternal flames of Mount Olimpos.

Since I plan to go not for another year, I haven't got into the nitty-gritty of it all. Any suggestions for a CO FF? I realize I could probably do an easy KL SFO-AMS-IST...or AF SFO-CDG-IST, but I'd really like to fly on Continental for most of the journey...understanding that throws me into a potential double, maybe triple connect situation.

From a statistical point of view, there are more passengers flying from Germany to Turkey than to North America ....actually the figure for the month of April from the statistic's office in Germany lists 344.000 Passeners to Turkey and 345.000 to all of the Americas ( Canada,USA ,Central and South ) with USA representing about 245.000 passengers.
This just to put things into perspective...
Certain days from medium-sized airports like NUE or HAJ you have more than twelve departures to various destinations in Turkey.
Turkish airlines fly from IST to HAM,HAJ,DUS,CGN,FRA,NUE,STR,MUC - and that daily with many cities several flights/day !

If all goes well, IST will come close to, or even hit 20 million passenger mark this year.

Here is the action plan for the next couple of years.

The third runway (18R-36L) is open to traffic with restrictions.

Short runway (06-24) will be elongated from 2300ms to 3000ms, and a new taxiway will be built.

Cargo terminal will be moved to east. The present cargo terminal will be demolished and 5 extra jetbridges will be added to the International terminal.

A new control tower is planned. The current one will be demolished for extra parking.

And the government is looking at the feasibility of a 3rd international airport in Istanbul. (probably to replace Ataturk)

Did you take that comment as an offense? I think it is quite normal that in different regions of the world people have different levels of knowledge about other regions or countries far away. As there were 2 responses from US members one might also conclude that the comment did add something to the conversation...

Well, the most German tourists and charter airlines are flying direct to the Turkish Riviera , to AYT and DLM. Specially AYT is the main destination for Germans. MasseyBrown, the south coast of Turkey, specially around AYT, is called Turkish Riviera, the west coast is the Aegean Coast and between them you can find the Turquoise Coast.
IST more in the north, is more used by Turks, who live in Germany, visiting relatives in the summertime. IST is also a destination for the north of Turkey (e.g. coast of the Black Sea).
But never the less, as mentioned above, Istanbul is a beautiful and interesting city with a long history. Once called Byzantium, later Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, later felt to the Ottoman Empire. See also:

Having been to Turkey more than once I can say it's a beautiful country. Especially when you try to 'escape' from the tourist areas like Antalya, Bodrum, Kemer, Alanya, etc you'll notice the beauty of this almost untouched country with its original and friendly population.
Istanbul itself is AMAZING if you are not used to being in big cities. I mean, I have been to NYC, London, Berlin, Paris - all with millions of citicens - but Istanbul is chaotic, vivid and exciting. Although it is geographically in Europe, and Turkey is a very western-oriented culture, it is still amazing to live in such an uncommon and strange atmosphere - for Americans even more than for us Europeans and esp. Germans with the huge Turkish population.

To show you how how popular Turkey is here in Germany, this is the list of all Destinations in Turkey served from MUC:

DEST IATA AIRLINE FREQ
Adana ADA (LT 1x week)
Ankara ESB (LH 2x/day; GV, TK, OHY, LT several times/week)
Antalya AYT (DE, LT, HF, GV, KK, INX, PGT, FHY, XQ, OHY, MNB, SHY several)
Bodrum BJV (PGT, XQ, HF, INX 1x/week each)
Dalaman DLM (HF, DE several times/week)
Istanbul IST (LH & TK 2x/day; KK, DI, GV, OHY several times/week)
Izmir ADB (LH 2x/day; LT, OHY, KK, TK, DI several times/week)
Kayeri ASR (PGT 1x/week)
Trabzon TZX (LT 1x/week)

You see several things here: AYT is far much more popular among German tourists than IST. But those two cities are not the only ones served from Germany.

I am an American and don't have a stereotypical view of Turkey-Its on my list of places to visit and everyone on of my friends who has visited it has not only been amazed by the scenery but has felt welcome there as an American and a non-Muslim.

For those of you who don't know it Turkey was "modernized" in the early 20th Cetnruy by Attaturk who brought to Country into the Modern i era while preserving its traditions-A lesson which could be learned by some of the leaders of ALL of the Religions of the Western Tradititon.

I must say that I am shocked that my remark that "Americans have a limited knowledge about Turkey" was found be be controversial.

Firstly, the remark was made in a positive sense, since Turkey is not yet a main stream tourist destination for most Americans, in general, most travellers do not know what the country has to offer. Travel to and from a country is, in part, dependent on tourism, and if one does not know about a country, its difficult to understand why people are travelling there. Also, if one does not know about the economics of a nation, its difficult to understand the demand for business travel. As mentioned, sometimes people do not know about far off lands, that reasonable and why I made the remark that I did - an average American knows more about Aruba and Cancun than a French traveller, and I think that the average German have a better knowledge about Turkey than an American traveller. Nothing negative intended.

Secondly, in the recent years, Turkey has become a one of the leading tourist destinations for people from Northern Europe - that is something the average American is not likely to know. Do you think that people in Greece are aware that Americans go to Cancun in huge numbers to vacation?

Lastly, most Americans I am certain are not aware of the demographic trends that have occured - many people from Turkey have immigrated to Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium for example. Those trends influence air traffic with lots of family members and friends travelling back and forth for visits. Many Europeans have purchased second/vacation homes on the Turkish Riviera, another factor that drives traffic.

Issue such as these influence the number of flights and connections between cities and countries - the original post asked why IST was so popular, an innocent and legitimate question, I was only trying to point out why travel to Turkey as increased in recent years. Is that offensive?

Quoting Revelation (Reply 20):

Firstly, surprise, I am an American - I happen to have a Dutch partner and split my time between and the US and Europe. Maybe I did conduct a survery, maybe I did not, how would you know? - when I speak with American friends (from my lofty perch - give me a break) and we talk about travel, most (and these are well travelled people in general) really do not know all that much about Turkey. Quite frankly, I find the tone and approach to each of the above remarks offensive - its your right to disagree with a my opinion, but your tone and attitude are outrageous.

IST really is an interesting place - it's a beautiful city... if only I didn't always have to pay for the visa to get in... the first time I arrived at IST, I happily walked towards the passport control, only to be greeted with those famous words: "You need a visa".

Fortunately, those were sold at a booth about 20 meters from the passport control - but it's annoying nonetheless...
