LOT Closer To 787

Wed Jul 13, 2005 6:41 pm

Hi,

as per daily business newspaper „Puls Biznesu” special internal committee checked the correctness of LOT board of directors recommendation regarding long haul fleet.
That means that the recommendation will be presented to the supervisory board for approval, most likely on August 2nd session.

The daily says that the recommendation is to purchase Boeing 787 aircrafts.

They talk about six planes.

LOT has currently 4 767-300ER (the fourth one is just being leased) and 2 767-200ER.

LOT are interested in about 6.

Are the 6x UFO B787 orders for LOT or another airline?

Although French air giant Airbus had been lobbying LOT hard to pick its A350 or A330 model, LOT's deputy president, Edouard Ullmo, said that the Polish firm ceased negotiations with the French company as far back as April.

LOT's spokesman, Leszek Chorzewski, refused to provide any information confirming the news, claiming that "the company will comment on the choice of the fleet after the final decision is made," which will take place at the beginning of August at the earliest. The value of the six airplanes is about $500 (z³.1,702) million.

http://www.wbj.pl/?command=article&id=27578

$500/6 =$83 mil. The list price as I remember is $120 mil.

I'm not saying Boeing is dumping the 787 but this price after >200 orders being placed seems a significant investment for Boeing.

Who the hell knows... First they were going to announce it at the end of 2004, then they moved it to February 2005, then to June, now August... I'm wondering if Boeing is still holding those 2008 delivery slots for LOT...

Now when August comes, look for board to vote no! Remember, there are board members from gov, and ex swissair.... Hell I bet they will not make it official untill december, or maybe next year.

The article says ABOUT $500 million. And unless you've personally seen a signed contract, you have nothing to talk about.

After all those pressures from both sides LOT management seems to be affraid to take any decision so they just postpone it by month, month, another month etc. Whichever way but make any decision LOT!

On the subject of 787 orders, does anyone know why Boeing shows the CO order as 5? I thought they ordered 10 firm?

Oh no, Airbus is barking (again) that LOT is allegedly in the wrong for not evaluating its offers...

Puls Biznesu quoted Edouard Ullmo, Airbus deputy CEO, as saying: 'LOT management in its letter dated April 26 told us it would not take into consideration Airbus' offer any longer and recommend the supervisory board choose the Boeing 787.

'We corrected our offer several times but the airline declined to view it... We are surprised that no independent specialist has been asked to evaluate proposals,' Ullmo said.

An order is not firm until it appears on the Orders section of Boeing.com. Anything prior to this stage is a commitment or MoU/LoI. At the end of 2004, CO stated an intention to place 10 firm aircraft, but now that the order has actually been firmed, they decided to only order five.

Perhaps financial considerations are playing a roll, though I would expect CO to have atleast 5 options on stand-by...

I agree. EK's insistence on a 300+ capacity fleet possibly eliminates the 789 from consideration. But let's wait and see...

BTW wasn't signing the 787 deal on the agenda of the Vietnamese PM on his trip to the US recently? Where in the process is that order now?

Signed sealed and delivered...just waiting for US EXIM go ahead I believe. Should be any week now before it is on Boeing's order totals.

I hope that LOT can finalize its order for the 787, simply because the 787 is the aircraft that LOT wants for its future longhaul needs. A couple of months ago, it seemed as if LOT was about to announce its 787 order and did not due to pressure from many parties, not just Airbus and Boeing, but also the US, European governments and EU politicians. Lets not get into A v B or the Europe v US thing, because there were reports that everyone was getting involved on all different levels; all of this was putting LOT and Poland in the middle of a very akward sitaution. If LOT wants 787s, they should get 787s...its as simple as that.

I can't remember off the top of my head, but by how much greater is the predicted range of the 787 to the A350?
The reason I ask, is I heard one of the "reasons" or excuses (depending on how you look at it) that LOT would prefer Boeing is because they want to serve some destination in South Africa non-stop, and they claim that they wouldn't be able to do it with the A350.
Can't confirm it, as it's something that a friend of mine claims he read somewhere.

Up front, I don't know the airline. However, FWIW, I also don't have the impression that it is AF. I think it is an airline that we don't really know about.

AFAIK, CO has full intent to buy 5 more B787s to make up their complement of 10. I'm just not sure of the timing but I think it would be in the next 12 months.

Quoting Milan320 (Reply 30):

In generic terms, it's not. The B788 is offered with 8,500nm and A358 8,800nm. However, the truth is that there is some conjecture about both figures.

Now that is new news to me! I have heard them talking about some new asian cities (Beijing, BKK, HKG) and maybe Mexico City after LH reported some sagnificant traffic connecting to these cities from Poland. There was also a talk about MIA some years ago. Even seen some posters and stickers at MIA, but it never happened. Can 787 do WAW-SYD westbound? How about Perth?
